Default 1/8th horrible times :(

Me and my friend took our vettes down to the local 1/8th mile track last night just to see what we could run. I used to run a 9.2 with a tpi 350 firebird with a few mods. So im thinking ok if i did that with that car, then my vette has to easy be in the 8's thinking 8.5 easy.

Well i have a 99 stock 6speed vette and my friend has a 2000 stock besides exhaust just from mufflers back and his is a 6speed.

We both stage up, did not get tires hot just staged. And bam right off the line i allmost stall out. He ran a 9.1 and i did a 10.2 absolutly awfull, not to mention my friend had a full tank of gas and a passenger around 200 pounds.
So i know he could get in the 8's

Second time up we run diffrent people. He runs a 04 cobra, The cobra turns out a 8.7 and my friend 9.1 again with passenger again. After they raced the guy in the corbra came up and said QUOTE ( THATS NOT A Z06?) the guy though he was running a z06 after talking with the guy he said he had a few mods to his car , air intake, short throw , exhaust , ect ? . So needless to say if this guy goes up agaist a z06 hes gonna get his *** handed to him.

My second run was just as bad however 10.4 A FREAKING MINI VAN COULD BEAT ME

My car didnt seem like it had any *** in it through all the gears nothing. So i said ok well i dont know how to drive it very good only had it for like 3 weeks 2 weeks of that in the shop getting oil pressure gauge fixed. So i let my friend drive it he turned out a 10.7 and he knows how to drive,

Well im thinking ok something is wrong with my ride. So we leave and i get home , at this point im pissed so i get on flat long road near my house, and take off just like at the drag strip twice. Both times i my car was renewed in power ??? The car is freaking faster then grease lighting ??? Only thing i did those times was i actually looked at my tach becuase i dont have HUDS. And i just tached it out. 1ST gear all the way up to about 5k 2ND all the way up to about 5800 rpm, then thrid by the time thrid hits im allready doing about 70-80 mph, , this is the only way my car seems like it has some ***** to it...

MY GUESTION IS , IS THIS NORMAL OR DO I JUST NOT KNOW HOW TO DRIVE?? IM STARTING TO WONDER IF THE GUY WHO OWNED MY CAR BEFORE ME CHANGED THE SHIFT POINTS IN THE COMPUTER, OR THE PEOPLE WHO JUST REPLACED MY OIL GAUGE SCREWED SOMETHING UP ...

ANY HINTS, TRICK'S on how to drag and drive these cars..

Turn off your active handling traction control. Or hold the button for about 5 seconds to go into competition mode. You'll see a difference then

I have the following 1/8 mile times, first number is time second is MPH.

8.463/86.32
8.581/86.19
8.585/83.35

I have an 99 FRC with a Blackwing, B&M Ripper and a Raptor shift light are my only mods. I hope this helps for comparison.

I have alot of info that I have learned so I will touch base on the important issues first. Turn off the traction control, period. Do a short burn out, not to heat the tires but to clean off the track marbles (rubber pieces from previous racers). Avoid the water box if on street tires. Learn to ease out the clutch, do not dump it. The C5 spins the tires very easily. Install a shift light, the redline comes fast in these manual box LS1's. I have my shift light set at 5.5k.
More to come. I am sure you will have more questions...

well the last time i turned of traction controll , as far as the competition mode that i dont have. Im going to install a tach and shift light soon as possible, i just cant see when to shift using the dash gauge and no hud.

I know alot of it is just practice, and im thinking not to dump the clucth is right way

i just had some power issuses, but i think it was becuase i coudnt see when to shift, i was all out of the powerband. Or atleast im hoping, and that its nothing wrong with my car, intermintent problems .,

If you hit the rev limiter the fuel is cut and the timing is retarded for a few seconds. Did you hit the limiter?

I think maybe I did on my secnond run , but on my other two runs im pretty sure I didnt. But not positive. I guess I need to get a external tach installed so I can see what the hell im doing during shifting.

With that being said , anyone know what color tach wire and speedo wire im looking for , when i go to splice in my new tach? Im trying to do a shearch now for the answers , but so far no luck,

I allso bought a 2/16 gauge from summit about a year ago that i never used in my firebird , Its a Cyberdyne digital speedo,,, when I got it from summit, i got only the gauge and no instructions, alittle off topic here but there is two post on the back of the guage , one ground and one 12volt , allso there are two wires comming out the back of the gauge one ground and one 12volt, then there are a white and purple wires that come out.... hummmm help! maybe ?

I wouldn't worry about the speedo. On the pcm wire #10 (white in color) on the red terminal strip is for the tach output. You can splice into this wire for a tach signal or shiftlight.

do a search on launching techniques and drag racing ... or search "Ranger" on Corvette Forum...he has an excellent write-up for racing C5s. But a stock C5 - 6spd should be in the high 8s for the 1/8th around 83mph....basically launch without bogging and shift at highest rpm possible, diffenately not at 5000rpm.

A 5K launch is good if you can slip the clutch correctley... I cut my best 60' a 1.92 on street tires with a 4.5K launch and an easy clutch let out.
