Cheap Street C5
The plan:
* Remove Heads, do port/polish (I will be doing my heads myself, but there are a lot of shops that can do this for $300-600), and use the new 2002 LS6 valves. Stock valves are about 100gm, the new LS6 ones are sodium filled and weight I believe ~60 on the intake and ~50 on the exhaust side ! I haven't gotten a price on the valves yet, but I think they'll definitely be worth the money and the increased rev ability.

* I'm looking into a header solution. I'm not happy with what I've been seeing on corvetteforum with the TPIS headers. I've seen a lot of quality issues with folks and these headers are more than $1000 !

I revved at a friend the other day, and a C5 just sounds EXOTIC, to me. They sound great, and they aren't really a restriction like the F-body single systems seem to be.
I'm running the back half pipes from a Borla XR-1 system and it sounds mean. The only other mod on my car is a Donaldson Intake.
The straight pipes didnt change my track times really. I ran 13.19 @ 109.xx and 13.14 @ 109.87 after. Both runs were with 2.1x 60ft times, so I know the car has a 12 in it easy. DR's are on the winter shopping list.
I'll be installing a T1 cam from MTI before spring, that alone should significantly change the sound at idle.
I'm already considering putting mufflers back on it, but I'm not out to spend $800+ on a new system so I am prepared to wait.

<strong>the 2002 LS6 valves are about $42 a piece. <img src="images/icons/shocked.gif" border="0"> I'd just stick to a dry shot and maybe removing the precats (if the 02's still have them). That and good frivetrain mods should be enough.

I like headers. But remember, this is "cheap street" c5. $849 is way too much for the power gain. That kind of money could buy all sorts of internal goodies. If it were between $849 headers and paying $674 (list) on the LS6 valves, the valves would get the nod. <img src="images/icons/grin.gif" border="0">
Pre-Cat removal doesn't really net that much, especially on '02s, their manifolds flow much better than pre '00 manifolds, maybe 5 HP from removing those? Also it would make it a "tad" louder, very subtle though.

I do go with the nod to valves though <img src="images/icons/grin.gif" border="0"> that you're considering. Do you think they will net you much power? Are you first to do this or have others switched the valves over, and if so, what were the gains?

As far as I know, I will be the first to switch to the new valves.
I am not going to remove the precats. I, too, have seen no gains worth mentioning from doing that on an '02.
A friend of mine with an '02 removed his precats and got no gain. He gutted his cats and mufflers and got a whopping 6 hp and 4 tq. It's not worth the noise tickets and the visual inspection hassle.

<strong>It occured to me on my drive home that you could probably get a cheap, low-mile, used set of '02 LS6 valves from a tuner. I would call MTI, ARE, etc and see what they have.
