Default New street wheel/tire combo

It's taken awhile, but I think I've finally decided on what I want:

Front: Fikse FM/5's 18" x 9.5" with 285/35YR18 Michelin Pilot Sports

Rear: Fiske FM/5's 18" x 12" with 345/35YR18 Michelin Pilot Sports

How does that sound? The rears will require mini-tubs to squeeze in the 345.

Sounds sweet, but that mini-tub is gonna be a bitch. Should look nice though.

Great choice! I think FM/5's look so damn good on our cars...especially FRC's.

Have you researched the tubbing job yet? If so, what have you come up with? I remember seeing a site with the job fully documented. I know you kicked *** on your HUD upgrade...

Thanks

I have seen the write ups on the mini-tubs, but am a little worried about it since I have no fibeglass experience. I was thinking about buying the LPE kit, if not it will be a good learning project for me.

FYI the HUD install really isn't that bad. It's just a little tedious pulling off the dash. I swapped in some white face guages last weekend for someone and it took longer than the HUD install did. After looking at the guages it made me wish I had done the same when my guage cluster was out. doh!

Oh, don't tell me you're buying another set of those cheesy FISKE wheels!!!

Seriously, the wheel choice sounds great, but I am wondering about your tire selection. According to my quick calcs, your front tires will have an OD of 25.85" while your rears will about 27.51". Are you sure you want to do this? Of course, it could be that the Michelins actual size is nowhere near their calculated size, that wouldn't be unusual. But it seems to me their sizing would have a pretty substantial disparity if these two tires have similar OD's...

Thanks for pointing that out Chris, it's something I have been wondering about. And here is why I picked the 285/35/18. But the reason I posted the specs was to disucss information like this!

Per the Michelin Pilot Sports spec sheet:

Stock Sizes:

F 245/45/17 - 25.7" OD / 806 RPM (Revs per Mile)
R 275/40/18 - 26.8" OD / 776 RPM

New Sizes:

F 275/40/18 - 26.8" OD / 776 RPM
F 285/35/18 - 26.0" OD / 800 RPM
F 295/35/18 - 26.2" OD / 793 RPM
R 345/35/18 - 27.4" OD / 758 RPM

Rear to Front RPM ratio:

Stock: 0.96
New F 275: 0.98
New F 285: 0.95
New F 295: 0.96

The 295/35/18 best matchs the Rear to Front RPM (Rev per Mile) Ratio of the stock tires. However I didn't want to squeeze them on a 18 x 9.5" rim, they should probably go on a 18 x 10" rim, agreed? The 285/35/18 should go on a 18 x 9.5" rim just fine and there is only a small difference in the ratio and additionally has the closest OD to the stock tire.

What do you think?

For a proper comparison, SW had FM5's on his Z07 and changed to the 10's. Personally, I liked the 5's better.

It's either 335/30-18's or 345/35-18's.
Some say the extra sidewall on the 345/35 helps hooking up a little.

Visually there is a big difference. I think the 345/35's look slightly too tall/fat for the car, but not badly so. I'm going 335/30. I'd be happy with either setup tho. Drop me an email at mjarnold@telocity.com if you'd like to see comparative pics.

If you go to 335's and 11.5" wheels you can save yourself the work of tubbing. They will fit with the proper offset and backspace.I have 285/35's on the front of mine with 10" wide wheels and 325's with 11.5"wheels on the rear.I'm thinking of doing the mini tub and going to 12 or 12.5" rears with 345's too.Let us know how it works out.

I went ahead and decided to go with the mini-tubs, LGM is working on them right now! I'll get some pics snapped to show how it's going soon.
