Default Is a convert slower than a coupe ?

I'm eyeballing a 98 c5 convert auto. And I was wondering how much performance wise does the convert cost me compared to a coupe ?

Thanks Guys,
Roger White

One of the things I like best about the C5 is that it was designed as a 'vert from the begining, no extra bracing required. This made it possible to keep the weight within 1 pound of the coupe. So to answer your question, 'verts are just as fast.

I agree with Walker...but, there is another disadvantage for a Vert, it's coefficint of drag...which only comes into play past 100 Mph.

One more thing about the C5 convertible? Have any of you with 'verts looked into buying the hardtop for the convertible, made by a company for $1995 (introductory price)? I got the poop at home but forgot their name. Looks real smooth but as expected, kind of pricey. The normal price will be $2995, real pricey!!!

Your thinking of smoothline. Also carvaggio sells a hardtop solution also.

And FWIW, verts weigh less than coupes, no matter what GM claims. Ive even seen them weigh a hair less than FRC's on the same scale with same fuel on board. Think about it. There is no difference except for the roof structure. And last time I checked fabric weighs less than big ol' back glasses, and hard tops, or roof panels.

I heard that the coupe is one of the most aerodynamic cars in production you can buy. Like a .29 drag rating????

Correct, the coupe is the most aerodynamic of the C5s. It would be a tough choice for me to choose between the Coupe (nice trunk!) or the convertible. I don't think I'd like a hardtop as much, I love having a roof that is removable.

Yep, the coupe's CD is .29, GM worked very hard to get there. The CD for the hardtop & 'vert is .31 for comparison.

One other disadvantage with a 'vert is that you need a roll bar to go quicker than a 14.00 second et at NHRA Tracks. Something any C5 will do with ease...
Personally, I don't care for the look of a convertable (any convertable) with an ugly roll bar/cage out in the breeze...

The tracks around here haven't said anything about running in the 13s. Some verts have run in the 12s without getting booted but I think that's pushing it.
