I live in Louisiana and it is very hot. During the hot months I run 20 50 this keeps my oil pressure around 40 42 . During the cold months run 5 30 to keep the same pressure....

If you're in an area where it's really cold, 5W-30--everywhere else, 10W-30

I only run 5w30. If it was really hot around here I'd run 10w30. Excess oil pressure is not necessary with these engines.

The one thing I don't like about 5w30 is that it uses more VI improvers in it to span that larger gap, compared to 10w30. Therefore the 5w30 will thin out easier. I see quite a few oil analysis reports where 5w30 has thinned out to a 5w20, especially Mobil 1 5w30 which is thin to begin with. Sometimes it only takes 2000 miles to thin out! That's why I am sticking with 10w30 all year round in my area. If you pick a good 10w30 with a low pour point, you don't need the cold weather pumpability of 5w30. As a matter of fact, many premium oils in 10w30 will outflow conventional 5w30s in the cold. The 10w30 I'm going to be running this winter has a pour point of about -50F.

yeah....what he said nicely put Pat...I don't think I'd ever put 20w50 in...low tenison rings have a hard time scraping the cylinder walls down with heavy oil...i'd bet that a couple of hp is lost too... just my .02

With 10w-30 I'm concerned about wear at start up thats where I've heard most of the wear takes place. I will be using Mobil 1 Trisynthetic in either weight.

Jason, you are absolutely right! 20w50 is much too thick.
Bill, the 10w30 will flow just about as fast as the 5w30 on a cold start, and the barrier protection in the oil prevents metal to metal contact anyways. I have seen no evidence whatsoever in oil analysis that would prove that 5w30 provides better protection. If anything, 10w30 shows better analysis results.
