Default Cheap modifications

I'm new to sports cars and the LS1 engine family. I just picked up a stock C5 last week with 36000 miles. It set me back a pretty penny. I don't have the first clue where to start with the performance upgrades. Any good inexpensive starters?

If your car has the stock filter assembly then here is my suggestion. Pull the cover off the stock airbox up front. Take two wire ties and wrap around the box to hold the filter and the filter frame in place. Just ake sure when you wash the car not to let water drip down onto the filer as it is now exposed. If you drive the car in the rain, you can make a hood seal out of some pipe insulation to keep water from dripping right onto the filter. This give you almost the same performance as an aftermarket airbox.

Open up the vents in the front of the car to let cool air in.

The more air in and out the more power you will make.

It is a 6 speed. What is the price of the Nasty air intake? Is it easy to install?

YOu can drill small holes in the foglight area to vent cool air to engine.

If your tight on cash since you just purchased car but you just gotta mod..

Buy airfilter intakes...exhausts..shifters on the various forums that are preowned..

Obviously just make sure the guys have lots of posts and seem legit..

Pay half the price for all your mods..

Theres no moving parts on exhausts..intakes..and half the shifters never make it to the proper breakin stage where they work nicely..

The Corvette forums are filled with more preowned product than you can shake a stick at. No moving parts..what the hell..

I'd hang with the car as you have it for a bit till you read about or hook up with some local Corvette guys to get a better idea of what you want..

Intakes..two concepts..Cold air intakes..Halltech Tric/Vararam/Vortex

Underhood intakes: Halltech T1 or Blackwing or the dual cone shown above.

Just make sure as your buying used..the 97 to 2000 corvettes used a 3.5 inch maf and the 2001 to 2003 are using a 4 inch maf..

You need to match the size to your car when purchasing..

As far as exhausts go..mostly sound benefit..One thing nice about going with Corsa touring or Indy's is that you know you wont have resonance..

Some other systems might..

Touring quiet..
Indy's louder..

X pipe's not a bad idea to get even idle sound as well.

Shaner S2 throttle body is a cool 169 dollar mod..

And buying a new Vinci 178 degree thermostat for about 95 bucks was in my opinion a good mod.

Congratulations on your car..

Vettes rock!

You guys are awesome. I'm 23 and new to the LS1 business. I really appreicate all the advice. Yes, after $32000 for a car, mods are a must but seem a little expensive. That is why I'm here. Cheap used stuff for now, then maybe more expensive stuff later. Thanks again...definately want to go with exhaust and intake relatively soon.

Where your foglights are. In a Z they are open, but have mesh grills over them. On a c5 they are covered. You can either drill them out, or buy an intke(like the VaraRam)that uses those to pull cool air in.

The best advice is to click the sponsors on the right side of this screen. Look around on each site, each are usually seperated out by car...c5, f-body, etc. I personally recommend Thunder Racing or MTI. Look at each mod and see what you like...then try to find these used. Air Intake is the first I would do, I think the donaldson filter setup is as good as any.
