Default 2001 zo6

yeah, im a noob to vettes, but i have been searching and in serious consideration of buying one, i have found one about 45 min from where i live, its a tourch red 2001 z06, it has 19xxxkm on it, now i know there were a few problems with the 01 z06, what im wondering is how often did the problem occur? like the leaky oil thing? does it happen in all 01's? and if so is it easly fixed?? i also know they came with differnt cams, lack of the hud, differnt suspension, but, are those really that big of deal? just would like some imput, my buddy owns a 2002 z06 and he just warns me that they have problems, but seeing as how im sure many people own 01 and can tell me with experience if they are actaully that much of a hastle ?
thanks

The best thing to do is check the service history at a GM dealer. If you see that the car was in the shop 20 times for whatever issue then you will know theres a problem. If you have the vin # I might be able to get you the service hist. tonight. Why not just buy an 02+?

Check out some of the vehicles in the North US (near whatever US state you live near) on EBAY. You can find them (02-04) all day long in the low $30's. I know several people who own the 01's though and they're all very happy! However, there are a few perks to having the later models...the differences are listed in detail on the sticky at the top of this forum. Good luck!

The 01's are fine. There is a problem with oil consumption for that year due to the piston rings that were used, however some cars use a lot, some don't its the luck of the draw. My 01 was using a Qt every 1200 miles then it hit 14k miles and consumption dropped to a qt every 2200. In any event, while I was having some major mod's done I had the tuner replace the Rings, bearings and bolts. It doesn't use any oil now at all. A re-ring job would run around between 2k and 3k or so last I checked. A couple of other things to look for, signs Battery leakage on the PCM which is under the battery and if its had the column lock problem repaired or a bypass installed. I would also check to see through the Vin number, when the car was built if its after April of 01 then you have the coated pistions and you are most likley ok in the engine department. Good luck in your search.

The oil usage issue is overstated (unless of course you were one of the unlucky 5%...)

Check this thread here: http://www.z06vette.com/forums/showt...ight=oil+usage

I've bought 2 cars off ebay and had no problems. I only buy them locally (using ebay's search/distance filters) That way I can look at them first. For an expensive car like a Z06, I'd probably take a mechanic with me...

I paid $32,999 american for an '01 Z06 with 9K last December. I've seen '01s listed from $27K - $35K. They are really great cars. I wouldn't sell mine for the $33K I paid for it and it's up to 27k miles...

Happy Hunting and don't give up.

I bought mine on EBAY for $34K. It had 19K miles. Paint had some small rock chips on the nose, as this was obviously a DD, but I can live with that. This was the 3d vehicle I've purchased on EBAY. My advice to you, find 2 or 3 in the same general area that you can look at, at the same time; check them out and buy the one that suits you best. Make sure to do your homework on each of them. If you buy an 04 with under 36K miles, it should still be under factory warranty, and you can even purchase an extended warranty through a dealership if you so desire.

BTW $38 for an 01 seems outrageously high! (if you're talking american $$$ I don't know the exchange rate???) If you are talking canadian dollars, what would be the amount in US $?

I have an 01 and love it. No problems with oil. The oil usage thing is not on all 01 cars, but alot of misinformed people blanket all 01s together as having a problem. Most Z06 owners are very educated about their cars, so you could talk to the seller regarding the oil issue. Anyone thats held on to their 01 Z06 for 5 years should know it well, and have recieved the recall information. Dont be scared of an 01, just be an informed shopper. I do think 38k for an 01 is high though. I will let you have mine for 10k less if you want a real nice bone stock one...

what rocktanski said....

I think the ring job is a recall thing and can be done @ no charge to you. My car had the re-ring done and no oil consumption issues at all.

As far as power on stock cars, don't sweat it. I race my friends and they have 02', 03' Z's. Sometimes I win and sometimes they win... The only thing I do miss is not having HUD.

good luck.
