Default Engine Removal for Cam swap??

Just like the Title says... you guys that are doing the cam swaps on a C5, are you dropping the engine our of the car or are you doing the swap with the engine still in the car??

I have the LS1/ LS6 V8 book written by Will Hendzel and he recommends removing the engine from the car, which brings me to my problem of being 8 hours away from my Pop's garage.

If you have done it in the car, any pics or directions would be nice.

No need to pull the motor, step by step guide with LOTS of pics can be found here.

Good luck, Shawn

Great post SPANKY, I have done this three times and never had to do a engine drop or removal to complete it.

The steering rack was a PITA, but I like what SPANKY did with his and that will probably what I do next time! Cool post Spanky!

+1 for steering rack stupidity. But I got all the rest. The steering rack and radiator stuff was the most frustrating.

I have done a few and I find supporting the motor with a hoist and dropping the k-member the easiest and quickest... but it can most certainly be done as described with little relative pain.

I guess I would have to do it this way to really understand how much easier it would be, but I can see how it would be, but I am getting so used to doing it the old fashion way of ripping it all out of the car from the top, I am all about something new.

I tried it this way after I saw Cartek do it this way. All you need to do is take the lower ball joints off, then take the four bolts holding the k-member in. Cartek actually took the bolts out of the steering rack, but I tried to leave it in place and it worked fine. You let the power steering drop down with the k-member. Make sure you keep checking for wire bundles, brake and coolant lines but it was cake. Getting that steering rack off was a PITA but I think realistically they are both around the same amounts of work. I think the work involved in lowering the K-member is probably just more appealing to me. Its also good practice for yanking the motor You need to drop the k-member to clear the oil pan on its way out the top.

no need to do this

as said, drop the xmember about an inch and the rack will slide out the drivers side, shouldn't take more than 20 minutes to remove, 18mm on the pres/ret lines, rem. the steering shaft(13mm)from the top w/ the alternator out
