Default Rebuilding a flood damaged C5?

Hello,

I'm a FBody and Corvette fan, living in Germany. Today I'm owning a 99' Camaro Z28 and I'm looking around for a nice C5.

Last week I found a car dealer here (it looks mor like a junk yard) who wants to sell a flood damaged US-Vette, that was imported from him to Germany.

I think he bought the car in the states to rebuild it over here and benefit from the fact, that Vettes are much more expensive here in Germany.

The facts:
- 2001 C5, Automatic (10/2001)
- 37.000 miles
- Was completely flooded over the roof

Price: 13.600,- USD

The dealer told me that the damage was caused by sweet water, but the level of corrosion on aluminium parts makes me beleving that it was salt water. From the outside the car looks great... but inside, the interior is a mess...

Being very enthusiastic at first.. The more I think about it... Even if I could use the very fine engine of my Camaro... There is to much work and there may be to many problems...?

Any thoughts?

Regards, Holger

WORD. even if i was building a racecar it would still be my last choice unless you get a good enough deal to cover alot of the loss.

I agree with the others. There are a large amount of vehicles on the market that were flooded during hurricane Katrina. The vast majority of these were flooded with salt water. I would not try to fix this car even if someone gave it to me for free.

WAY too much money for a car that is totaled. Nothing but the body is usable in that vehicle.

It would be cheaper to buy a C5 here in the US and import it yourself.

Do not buy!

FWIW alot of the "Katrina Cars" are not that bad. Insurance companies were totaling cars if the carpet was wet. I have a friend that bought an 04 Mach 1 that was totaled and all he did was change the carpet.

The only thing that car is good for is to completely strip it and run a seperate powerplant, ala carbed small block and turn it into a dedicated race car. Other than that, get away from it. Way to much time and money will be spent on it trying to get it back into decent condition.

Thank you for all your psotings and opinions...

I've heard some other horror stories about another flood damaged C5 here in Germany. There is nealry everything defect and the guy, who tries to fix it says: "Never again"...

I'm searching now for a good used C5.

Thanks, Holger
