Default to ZO6 or not to ZO6

That is the question....I need a new car!

I'm going to get an 02-03 electron blue Vette, but need education on the ZO6 option. I plan on doing at least a cam/headers but dont want to spend much money at all on suspension like I did my camaro.

If all you want is a cam/bolt on car then look for an '01 ZO6. Read the sticky at the top of this forum for info on the ZO6 package.

Everyone with a FRC/coupes brags about how much faster (than a Z06) their car is with less invested. Everyone with a Z06 has no regerts. You will be happy with either.

Pick your poison .

The Z06 when properly driven is an 11 second car off the showroom floor....there's been more than a few that have done it with ideal track conditions. I'm in the quest for 11's stock as we speak. Plus you get the exclusivity (sp) of the Z06. My dad has an 01 coupe and the Z06 would run circles around his car in every department. If you buy the Z06 you will NOT be dissapointed, I guaruntee it!

Depends on what your looking to do.
If you want a pretty quick stock car get the Z06
If your just gonna mod it anyway get a FRC and goto town.

I'm gonna do the ZO6 cause I put something like 10G's in my Camaro and almost all of it was lost in the wreck. Dont want that to happen again, I hope the ZO6 handles and sounds well enough that I dont have to waste money on many mods again

Default Z06

Get an '02 or newer, exhaust manifolds are freer flowing. Suspension tuning is better as well.

I have a low mileage '03 Electron Blue Z06. Car is plenty fast stock for congested S. Ca. freeways. It gets 28 mpg on the freeway, 20 mpg overall. Amazing considering the performance.

I swapped out the shifter for a Hurst, car had new Wilwood rotors, Toyo Tires on chrome Z06 wheels, and B&B cat back exhaust when I bought it. Stops on a dime, exhaust sound is very nice, not too loud, no droning. Shifts much better but the clutch has too much travel. Next project.

Do some looking around on the forums and Auto Trader (that's where I found mine). Pay a few bucks more for something nice. You won't be disappointed.

If you're going to mod more than boltons, FRC, if not Z06. Either one will be great, just plan out what you want before writing that check.

When you mod a vette the costs arent going to be cheap, I spent almost 3K on just exhaust for my Z06. What ever you mod, it wont be cheap.

The only thing I hate with my 01 is they all have oiling problems and eat oil anytime you go over 4000RPM. Other than that I cant complain. I love that car.
The cars handling is amazing, sound is also very addicting once you hear it.

I guess I'm slightly partial to FRC's but I've been through a couple camaro's before I started shopping for vettes. I planned on doing at least heads/ cam/ and full bolt-ons with a possibility of getting another stroker motor. The choice for me was obvious. I needed to find a low mileage FRC. Also, I really wanted a Speedway White Z06 but they only made them in 2001 and I just didn't feel like dealing with the possibility of oiling problems. So I decided to build my own. Been very please so far. Mods will be here soon.

I went from a bolt-on Coupe to a Z. They are completely different cars. Besides the engine, you get a better suspension and lighter vehicle. You should drive both and compare for yourself.

In my opinion if your intention is to mod the car, then Z06 is not worth it. Take the difference in cost and use it for mod money. The Z06 is a great package, don't get me wrong. But the few things that differentiate from a coupe or 'vert motor wise will be replaced if you do a H/C swap. Suspension wise my coupe is tighter than my friends Z06. But to be fair, I had to mod it to get there (Z51 springs, Bilstein's, Hotchkiss bars). Though the differences in a my buddies stock suspension '99 Z51 car without runcraps and the Z06 alignment and the Z06 are pretty minimal. A good alignment and non runcraps do wonders for any C5 (especially one not saddled with the base suspension). So it all depends on what your goals are. If you want to just add headers and cam and drive the thing, get the Z06. If you're planning on a lot of mods, get a nice condition coupe or 'vert.

I agree with this, a Zo6 is basically a mild H/C LS1. If you plan on modding any more than bolt-ons you'd be wasting money on the Zo6. Check out its breaking and cornering stats in some well know car magazines, it has some of the best #'s of any stock production car.

I choose the z06 over a coupe, out of the box it's a sick car but i did get tired of 350rwhp. I currently am having h/c a callaway honker and headers put on. so all told it's costing me about $41,000 to have a car that's gonna have 450rwhp. if you know you are going to want to mod you're better of with a z51 coupe and take the money you save and go FI.

Just drive a Z06, and you'll be buying one. That will take care of your dilemma

I was in the same dilemma as you. a z06 is around 5-10k more than a FRC. I thought it would be cool to have a Z06. I also knew with small amount of mods the FRC corvette could beat the stock z06. I was planning on doing h/c on my car so I got a good deal 2000 FRC 53k $20,000. In perfect condition with aftermarket corvette sport seats. It is so nice I almost want to keep it stock. I know if i had spent 27-32k on a z06 i wouldnt want to mod it. It just depends on what your plans are with the car. Going with a lot of mods get a frc, basically stock get a z06.
