I also own a 2004 GTO. I haven't modded it nearly as heavily as you though.

I test drove a local guy's c5z.

The C5z is a thrill to drive, no doubt. If I were only looking for the fastest race car I could afford, I would have traded in on one already.

So, why did I stick with my GTO? Because no Corvette I've ever driven is as enjoyable in the daily commute, and that's where I use it 90+% of the time.

I'll keep my GTO until a better power commuter comes along, (new Camaro/GTO perhaps in 2009?) or until I decide to have an economy commuter + track-only race car (which would be a Z06).

I have nothing against GTO's. As I feel they are great cars. However,...I don't think your car, would take out a 03 Z06 from as roll, or from a dig.

Different cars, different aero effects...and as you mentioned, the weight thing is what kills it.

I love the goats,..anyone that has not driven one, really outta, cause they are one of the best GM cars built but,...when compaired to the vette....well, you just can't compair them.

Not too long ago, when my car made 400rwhp,...I walked a vortech LS1 gto pretty bad from a roll. The dude was pissed but...his HOT girlfriend in the passenger seat was smileing.

I don't know about that. I've beaten several C6's, those guys were really ticked. Granted, I have a lot of mods on my car. The 03 vs my 04 would be close, but stock for stock the Z06 is superior.

I had a 04 GTO.

There's no comparison. It's just a fat pig of a car.

The fast Z06 list is being reformated and updated and heading for permanent sticky status as we speak (vette forum). There is a copy here also, but at the time wasn't much interest in it so it fell by the way side. Might get sticky status here with new excel format.
Ranger is now at 10.85 in a stock C6 Z06 with drag radials.
The advice to check Rangers launch tech write up is right on. Using his insight allowed me to get the 11.71 in my sig on my 5th pass on Drs, so it works.
Now if ya want a bonestock longblock 10.xx C5, well I can show ya how to do that if ya like, with a whole lot less $$ and mods than the GTO.
The Z06 does much more than just drag, corners better, stops better and is a dream to drive, not to mention at the end of the day you have the badest vette parked in your drive. Like has been said, drive one and you'll be hooked. I also like the GTO and wish to have one for a DD some day.

I will admit I'm a little hestitent because I have never owned a stick shift car. I'm sure I could drive it, but driving it like I stole it might be a different story.

A Zo6 with a small cam and bolt on's can run 10's.
They are underrated on all tracks!

What do you want in your performance car? A straight line asphalt eater, or something that turns on a dime and gives back two nickels? If handling, light weight, power and looks turns your crank, then drop the dimes for the ZO6. If you like toting the carpet-crawlers along to Grammy's house, then stay with your goat. Both cars are nice, but they each have their roles.

Bad drivers get eaten up every day. The average age of a C6 owner is 50+. Not saying they can't drive but I'm saying that they might not be going ***** to the wall like you. The C6 is heavier than my C5Z and since I bought my car for all out performance vs. the C6 performance plus comfort I'd say that your results are typical. BTW, you started quite a lively thread here. Props!!!

Nice stereotype. Where do you get your statistics? I'm 38 and this is my second Vette.

I am not sure your average age is correct if this is any indication.

A GREAT time in a C5Z06 would be 12.3 at 116 mph bone stock...

The average time is 12.4-12.7 at 113-116 mph

A stock 2004 GTO's GREAT time would be a 13.3 at 107 mph bone stock...

The best drivers in the world at the best tracks with the best -800 density altitudes cutting 1.5-1.6 60 fts bone stock have ran high 11's in C5Z06's and high 12's in 04 GTO's...

The point is that eighter way you look at it their is a 1 second gap in ET and 10 mph gap in trapp speed between a 03 Z06 and 04 GTO...

So did your mods close this second and 10 mph gap???????

Since you have the AFR's Id guess your around 420 rwhp with that small cam...

420 rwhp is about what you need to run with a bone stock 350 rwhp C5Z06...

Takes around 70 more rwhp since your around 600 pounds heavier...

So it should feel pretty much the same acelleration wise...

remember your well modded but the LS1 GTO is the slowest LS1 car that GM made..

LS1 C5 vette....3260 pounds...12.9-13.4 at 106-110 mph

LS1 F body.....3450 pounds.....13.0-13.5 at 104-108 mph

LS1 GTO........3700 pounds.....13.2-13.7 at 102-106 mph

So your comparing that GTO to this

LS6 C5Z06.........3150...........12.2-12.7 at 113-116 mph

Thats a hech of a lot of realastate you had to make up for.

When my 3250 pound C5 coupe had 378 rwhp I could barely edge out bone stock C5Z06's by a tenth or two

Thats some good runnin for that lower mph...what kind of 60 ft was that?????

Im thinking you need a 1.6 60 ft to run a 12.0 at only 114 mph????

If you were on the stock tires then I commend you for some good driven off the line man!

So to the origional poster...12.9 like you read in some magazine is no were near the norm for a stock c5 Z06...

Any car that can trapp 113-116 mph is capable of low 12's or possibly high 11's right off the show room floor with the right driver/traction...

Do your self a mental favor and trade GM's worst reputation car for their best reputation car....

cant explain it any better than that.

If you know anyone that has access check out R.L. Polk registration data. The most recent data as I recall stated the average age was 52 or 53.

Probably not, thats a commemorative edition car, carbon fiber hook and the unique paint job. If you can, its a hell of a deal.

I was told the stripes were tape and could be removed. If I can't get it for around 31-32k I'll have to keep looking.
