I have had a 01C5,02 Z06, and a 04 GTO. If i had to choice to buy another one, i would go for the Z06 again. Great gas mileage for a 405hp car, looks damn good, and has cooler gadgets that most other cars out there made by GM

I haven't driven a LS2 GTO but I have driven an 04. The GTO reminds me of a comfy car with power. It's a more...practical car. The vette, as already said is the total package as far as power, handling, etc.

Drive both and see what you like better. I guess it depends on your lifestyle.

C5 coupe = low 13s (average)
C5 Z06 = low 12s (average)

Yes, the Z06 feels quicker. It is also louder inside since there isn't any sound proofing, and the suspension is stiffer than the coupe.

I was in the same boat. New GTO vs. used C5 Z06. I'm happy that I chose the Z06. Its over 1 second faster in a 1/4, handles much better, and is a blast to drive.

That said, I'd rather daily drive a GTO.

I say don't waste your money on a gto. In the end you will have a vette that will hold its value. You see that some 02 Ws6's are going for more than a few 05' Gto's and every 04 Gto.
How's this for gas mileage for you in a 405hp car. Mods in sig. cruise on at 63mph was getting between 30.5-32 mpg and at 45 mph I was getting 38 mpg!!!! Lets see a heavy pig like a GTO get that kind of mileage.

I paid $34k for mine. Had only 6200 miles on it and right now around 7300 miles on it. I would say get one with lower miles. Between 30k and 35k you can get one for.

Insurance for me with 21st century is $420 every 6 months with full coverage, $300 deduct collision and $0 deduct comp. Although this is a pleasure driving car and I have a daily car I drive to work. That is what makes a big diiferance. You mentioned about a beater, definitely keep it. The savings on insurance alone is worth it.

a regular C5 to a Z06 there is a huge differance. Power is just insane and the ride is better. Do this, 2nd gear at 3000rpms and just floor it!!! You will buy the car just for that! LOL

i had this same problem i say drive a GTO and then drive the Vette and the difference is clear... drive both cars in a 6spd so they are somewhat evenly matched... just for your info my buddy got a 05 GTO and went aganist my Zo6 and never had a chance. the vette is a true bred race car from factory with no mods, but to all there own depends what u like. BUT LIKE I SAID TEST DRIVE BOTH AND U WILL KNOW WHAT U PREFER AFTER.....

I've had a GTO and 3 C5s. Don't waste your money on a heavy GTO.

$25-30k for a 2001-2002 Z06.

I was in this similar situation last year about this time... I realllllllllly wanted a Z06 since they came out in 2001... BUT! Not having a removable roof really made me second guess.. I ended up getting what I currently have 2001 Coupe.. Glad as hell I got a coupe and not a Z06. Cruising with the roof off is a great feeling.. I dont care about the extra stiff frame/handling characteristics that the Z offers because of this or other minor things... Get the coupe, take the roof off and roll!
