Default why are vettes so quick?

hey guys, noob to LS1tech, but a long time vette fan.

anyway....seems like from my lurking and from what ive seen the C5 vettes seem to be quite a bit faster stock for stock than the SS/TA's(M6). looking at drag times, seems like most vettes trap aroun 107-109 stock, and with simple mods 112 or so. thats much better than some BPU SS's!

seems like a 330whp vette runs much quiker than some 370whp+ f-bodies?

or am i just a moron?

Because they are light in weight.

Vettes are about 250 lbs lighter...350 for Z06...better wt distribution towards rear of car...more aerodynamic helps trap speeds a little. Add that all up and it is probably worth 40 hp.

Less weight is a big contributing factor, but there is also the different suspensions. The vettes IRS gives better handling over the fbodies solid axle. The LS1 vettes do make a little more power than the fbody because of the different cam specs.

Less weight, better aerodynamics. The Vette motor has the same cam as the f-body motor, the higher rating for the Vette comes from the induction and exhaust setups. The IRS doesn't help anything when trying to jump from a dead stop either. Again, less weight, better aerodynamics.

and as far as drag racing the difference is very minimal in the 8th stock vettes should be easy 8.5's while fbods 8.7's, while in the quarter 13.0's vs 13.4's, the reason for the bigger differnece in time between the two in the 1/4 over the 1/8 is again aerodynamics, the faster it goes the worse it gets for the fbody...
It in no way has to do with more power, actually in most cases a t/a or camaro will dyno stock higher than a stock vette...thanks to the HP abosorbing IRS of the fbody straight axle...so think like this
Stock Vette vs lid/catback fbody=Drivers Race
CAI/Catback Vette vs Lid/catback/header fbody=Drivers Race
Cai/catback/header vette vs lid/cb/header/cam=Drivers race(unless its a big cam)
and so on and so forth...

One of the biggest differences between the 2 lies in the stock tuning, if you ever get a chance to peak at a stock tune for a f-body and stock tune for a vette, and even further the Z06. Gm made the f-bodys very rich, vettes run a leaner tune, and Z06's leaner then both of them, its there way of keeping the food chain in order.

My 99 made 299/310 to the ground with extra heavy repro ZO6 wheels on the car, bone stock with the stock 55K plugs, wires, and air filter.

Typical head/cam or bolt C5 is going to be very dependent of what components you go with, but here's how I've seen it:

C5 97-00 -- Bolt on's usually net around 335-355 RWHP and 345-360 RWTQ. Head/Cam anywhere from 425 approaching up to 500 RWHP.

C5 01-04 -- bolt on's are a tad higher than the earlier years, same for head/cam.

ZO6 -- Botl on's will usually make around 380-400 RWHP/RWTQ. Head/Cam evens up with the rest (ZO6 bottom end isn't anything special).

The gearing in the Z06's make them rev up a little quicker than the standard F-body. Gotta love the M12 tranny vs the M6. To be honest, I think F-body make a little more stock vs stock due to having a live rear axle vs a Vette's rear end. The F-body's have a little less drivtrain loss.

your welcome vettejr, i an still asking similar questions as i want a c5 base withing the next four months and id be happy with bolt ons on any year, no matter what year i get 97-04 they all get LG Pro LT's, B&B Bullet Catback, some kinda xpipe, and a Volant CAI. but if its pre 01 it will have to get an ls6 intake as well, i should be on the 340rwhp/350rwtq mark and be really happ with that.
Estimated times for strip are
7.9's at 90mph in the 1/8th
12.30's at 113 in the 1/4
if i can get some 1.9 60s or so

You can delete an X-Pipe from your wishlist if you get the LG Pro's. That's a header to axle exhaust system, X-Pipe included.
