I have an 01 Z06 with a LS7 ,I have 533Rwhp and not 100% sure what rwtq is I think it was about 495rwtq. I have 410s in it now ,I not sure if I should change back to 342s or maybe 373s for better traction in first and second .What do you think,Thanks for your in-put

Personally, I'd stick with the versatile 342's; but that's just me! BTW, very nice setup you have there...quite the beast, and I bet you'll surprise the hell out of many folks who dare to compete against you!

IMO 3.90 and especially 4.10 will be a little much for your power, but if you think you can get away with a 3.73 that's what I would use if you plan on making much/any more power I would probably just go back to a 3.42! It all depends on what you plan on doing with the car. If you plan on taking it to the strip just do some gear calculating and make sure you will not have to go to 5th in the 1/4, because your car should trap mid 130's properly driven!

I've got to agree w/ the 3.42s--especially w/ the M12 short-geared tranny & a 500ish RWTQ LS7.
I wish the new Zs would have M12 gearing--they'd make the cars explosively quick @ lower speeds.

Have fun!

I have a 383 with 3.90s, and have been considering going back down in gears. If I change I would do 3.42s incase u ever want to spray it.

You want to gear it so you are 200-400 rpm above peak HP at the lights assuming you want best 1/4 mile et. If traction is a problem with the correct gear then you need to work on traction, not changing gears. Get some sticky tires and maybe suspension work. A good strong rear anti-sway bar is a good start for holding traction. Keeps both rear tires planted more evenly.

How do you drive it? Match the gears to your needs.
If you gear down so there is no spin in first, you'll be really slow in 3rd - 6th.

I could see 3.73s, but I would not go back to 3.42s.

A lot of different opinions here.....but I think that you should match your gear to your cam. You need to make sure that when you shift at high rpm, your rpms drop down to a place that you're making power. Check the cam card to see where you're peak power is. Then start doing some calculation.

I have to echo the above. I have 490 rwhp 445 rwtq in my FRC and the 3.42's are great for daily driving but not too impressive at the track. 3.73s would've been ideal for me if I was going to track the car more often but considering I get 30+ mpg on the highway and only go to the track once, maybe twice a year I kept my 3.42's when the rear was upgraded to a DTE stg III. I also like being able to hit 200 mph in 5th gear more then trapping 125 at the track.

I agree that it depends on what you like to do with the car.
I would not go back to 3.42s. You may be disaapointed going from 4.10's.
If you road race and alot of street driving I would go with 3.73's. That is probably the perfect gear for your setup.
If you want to drag race alot and use slicks, I would go with the 3.90's.
I've had all ratios with an M12 and M6.
Your car is calling for 3.73's.

You're running a big block that has more torque down low compared to the standard 346.

Most of the respondents do not have the big block torque that you have. LPE (lingenfelter) runs 2.73's in some of their cars. What's the sense in having all of that power but never being able to use it.

I would try either 3.42's or 3.15's. I have 3.42's in my current set-up (Cam & headers) and can spin the tires easily in 1st and 2nd.

I would like to install a 427 TT someday, but I have to sort out the car first before doing any more mods to it.

My diff took a ****, so I went with 3.73s. Didn't want to go 3.90 on a daily driver and I figure I won't gain anything anyways considering the MN12's gearing.
