Which would you rather own?
Had a C5 vert and have driven many C5 Z's....both great cars, but the C6 is hands down a better car. Why? Interior, seats, fit and finish, lights, looks (arguably), more cubes, warranty, etc.... If you are looking for a designated track car, then I might stick with the Z since it is cheaper.
Ugly? To each his own.....

And the wheels on the '08 look uglier than the '97 wagon wheels... uhh ohhhhh... I'm getting sick... oh crap I'm gonna puke.... looking at some pics I just saw.... oh no...

In fact, I'd say the one place where the C6 didn't really make any significant gains is in the ride quality/handling department (the suspension designs and dynamics are basically the same). Compare a C6Z to a C5Z and the rides are nearly identical. A C6Z51 is slightly more compliant than a C5Z and by that same margin doesn't handle as well.
If maximum handling capabilities aren't your thing (and they may not be, heck, I'd say 99% of the owners won't use 5/10ths of the base handling) then a base C6 will ride more comfortably.
. C6 has a flat one and the face isn't that pretty. The other main reason I prefer the C5ZO6 is the rear window. I was never a fan of the hatch back on a Corvette. The short back window looks so much better to me. Although the C6ZO6 is just agressive enough overall for me to overlook the back window. Now if the C6ZO6 had a C5ZO rear window, well that might make the decision a little harder. Just my .02, hell its probably not even worth that.
And your last statement about car evolution ... applies to maybe 80% of all car lineups. Especially considering manufacturers are trying to balance perforance, comfort, safety, etc

Look at my sig and tell me what you think.
There are always exceptions. However, the resulting vehicle is the best combination of what the manufacturer thinks the consumer wants. In the case of the vette? More performance, better interior, improved quality, and freshened styling. They delivered.
