Lingenfelter builds an awesome 427...9's at 137 with death-bed 4L60E!
My Formula was up for most of the year until mid-August or so...busy with job & family. Lingenfelter was going to work on a 427 for my GTO, but my stock bottom end 346 was starting to puff some smoke out the right side. Anyways, we changed direction from building the motor for the GTO to one for the Formula.
Jason, Joel, and the rest of the LPE team put together an awesome package. With the airbox and my little MAC headers and 2.5" mufflers, it made 644 hp and 575 ft-lbs. This is with STOCK hydraulic lifters, not Schubeck or other "modified" hydraulics. Unlike some people, I WILL post the cam specs: (LPE GT1-3) 112 248/263 at 0.050, 0.656" i / 0.663" with the 1.7 stock rockers. Those that hide their specs, that's your perogative. It's not like we are racing in Stock Eliminator or whatever.
Compression is ~12.0, heads are LPE LQ4/LQ9's with 2.10/1.60 valves...flow in the 333 cfm range at 0.650" (may be a bit higher, but I can't remember).
I had the most awesome "BOB" (Best-of-Best) 4L60E that had never been opened up...we changed the converter to the Yank TP4400 on my buddy's lift. With it's original fluid and filter (yes, I'm lazy on some stuff), it made it for 100's of runs...until this week with the 427.
Went to the track (Stanton / Mid-Michigan Motorplex) and first full run, with the trans suddenly slipping badly and a tire spinning "whopping" 1.54 60', it ran 9.926 at 136.26 with a 6.354 at 111.53 in the 1/8th...the converter also was way too loose with the new amount of torque that I was hitting my 7200 limiter before the traps. I ran a bunch of 10.0's at 136 to 137.5 with the trans getting work, but all gears kind of working...
Runs then went like this...2nd or 3rd gear burnout (I have my trans wired to be able to electronically shift manually via a 4-position switch on the console)...go up and come up on the converter, and then, lots of rpm with basically no movement...1st gear or something is trashed...it's just like if your clutch is smoked in your manual...lots of smell, lots of rpm, not much movement.
Since it will now be my last day (night) at the track for the year, I decide to launch in 2nd. The slips are in the truck, but, with my sudden 4L60E morphing into a Powerglide, a slipping one at that, here came a couple of 10.0's at 135-136 with 1.54-1.61 60' Then, with the trans fluid clean, but smelling rather interesting, I packed up.
So, considering three weeks ago, I was running 1.39 60's with my little 346, I would say that come spring, it might just be a "bit" quicker. I did not want too high of compression or a solid roller, at least right now, and had no particular speed goal in mind...just wanted to run 9.99.
Once I get the trans right with a correct converter for the car, I think it might run just a "bit" better. A couple of buddies were out there and video taped a bunch of my runs, but not the 9.92...oh, well. I look at the tapes to see how well they did.
See you guys in the spring! I hope everyone met or will meet their personal / car goals this year. Good luck and safe travels to all going to the Thunder Shootout.
Take care. Dave
PS: Raceweight was around my 3131 from before...it was around 3090 before the 427 plus I had 1/2-tank of gas vs. my usual 1/4.

Nice Dave. I have a 400T laying around not doing nothing, if you want to throw it in there & see what it will do. The only convertors I have are nitrous specific. Hey, I even have a few kits laying around. LOL.

I'm not sure just yet. I've always thought about how nice "SS 427" sounded. I've been working as much as I can to catch up on things. I think it will end up being a 408, or 427. Although its looking like there isn't much $$ difference between the 2, after machining & assembly.
Next question would be keep it a nitrous application, go NA, turbo, or blower. Since I'm starting from scratch, I'm open to suggestions.
Right now I would have been happy with a stock motor. I wish I would have kept by short block. I could have still driven the car.
How is the 427 on the street with that size cam? Or is it pretty much "race only"? I thought about a solid roller, but not sure I'd want the extra hassles along with the extra $$. I have more questions about your setup, check your PM's. Thanks.

I think the hot ticket from now on will be a 402 square motor (4.00 / 4.00) using good rotating components and an LS2 block. The extra 25 (actually closer to 26 cubes) are nice, sound sexy on paper and in person, but for the money, a 402 looks like a good bang. On the other hand, on a budget, as cheap as 346 short-blocks are getting, and as good as the stock cranks have proven, a high winding 346 would be my "budget" motor to recommend.
I may stick the 427 in the 04 GTO that it was originally being built for and build either a 8000 rpm 346 or a stroker 402 LS2.
Harold, I got your PM and will try to give you a buzz in the next few days. Take care.

What size tire were you running on? Your setup is very similar to a setup I may be running next year. I've upgraded to a 28x10.5" ET Drag for my new strange 12 bolt w/4.10's in hopes to achieve 10's NA SI.. I remember you running a similar tire for your H/C setup.. I'm curious what kind of tire you may upgrade to if you plan to launch off the brake and actually dead hook it. I see so many cars think they have enough tire when they still get a pinch of wheel spin off the brake.. You're cuttin the 60's (the 1.3's) that you do cause you're not getting any spin.. very nice.

You know it's getting that time of year up here...put the cars up and get out the snowmobiles and snow throwers. Sure was fun with both my boys out for Halloween...just one more year 'til the oldest may be in a Jr. Dragster! Take care.
