What a weekend. Making it to the final after all the problems we had this weekend was killer. We were the only radial tire car that went down the track every pass without spinning. All the 60fts averaged 1.22-1.23.
Thanks to Procharger, AFCO and Mickey Thompson.
Heres a recap from Brady.
The weld held, it didn't blow up. We thought it did because of the deep rumbling, but upon further review from the logs and talking to Tommy- what happened was he thought it didn't shift (electric shifter) and so he shifted it about .0005 seconds after the electric shifter. So the shifter shifted to drive and Tommy unknowingly shifted to neutral.
The rumbling was the rev limiter.
Oh well, that's racing- it's all good. We worked our asses off all weekend. It started with a broken u-joint first hit Friday. That took out the 35 spline pinion yoke so Tommy and Matt Swindle hauled *** to BTE and got a replacement. We got the car put back together 5 minutes after the closed the lanes (6pm WTF?).
Saturday morning we went out and clicked off a 7.43 @ 188 or something. Not bad for the first 1/4 mile pass... ever. I knew the MPH was down and looking 7531 box it was no wonder. I failed to move the rev limit curve up out of the way in high gear. It rode the rev limiter from about the 1000' on. It isn't an issue 1/8th mile racing. Lesson learned.
Second and final qualifier I thought it was going to freight train but it went another 7.43 @ 188. WTF? We did notice a big fireball when Tommy lifted, but didn't know what was up. When we got back to the pits Tommy was shaking his head and said "we're probably done".. Looking around the engine compartment there was molten splattered aluminum everywhere. We found the back of passenger head was blown out. Blown out to the point where you could hang a couple fingers in there and touch the piston. LOL.
We rationalized that we pushed the head gasket on the rev limiter on the first pass and created a channel for the "plasma cutter" effect that occurred.
So, we did what anyone would do- we pulled the head and welded it up in the pits (well most of it, we fixed the combustion chamber but didn't worry about the water jacket since we run it dry with the methanol). MadMan welded for about 3 hours while Tommy and Matt went to BB&T Racing to get some new head gaskets. We were able to complete the "machine work" with a dewalt grinder and a couple flat files.
We stayed up most of the night getting it all put back together, and fired it up this morning. It sounded great, like nothing had happened.
1st round eliminations we ran it out and I again thought it would freight train, but it ate a blower belt at about 900', the boost just slowly fell off through the traps. The belt did manage to beat a hole in our Van Overbeek carbon/glass hood though!! Yay. It ran a 7.49 @ 189 or something.. Oh yeah- the blower belt took out the crank trigger wiring, the fuel line from the cell to the pump and a -12 line from the valve cover to the puke tank.
We fixed all that fun stuff and found an injector o-ring pushed out so we had to pull the fuel rails and fix that. We made the call for 2nd round with about 1 minute to spare.
We got lucky 2nd round and Alvarez wheel stood the car so Tommy drove it to an easy 8.X pass
3rd round was a bye so we just took the beams and drove through.
We had Wren in the finals and they thought we were hurt because of all the crap we had been through. But we weren't .
Tommy treed the **** out of Wren .075 to a .195 and 60' a 1.23 to Wren's 1.35 (?). 330' we were out 3.35 to 3.54 (?) and somewhere right around there it went to neutral so it was all over with.
Wren knows he was lucky
We met a bunch of super cool guys and had a great time. Everyone was awesome.

Dang fellas! I wish we'd have been there on Sunday, so instead of standing around BSing between the qualifying runs on Saturday we could have helped you guys out! From the tower something definitely went wrong about 1000' the last pass saturday, but it was definitely on a pretty good hit before then! I have a feeling that 7.40 of Wolfe's isnt gonna last too many more weeks. Wren's car is all over it as is you guys!
