Default Skinnys and slicks, Bias ply in front and radial in back?

Hey all wanted to know if there would be any problems running a bias ply front tire (MT Sportsman on a 4 inch summit star) with a radial in the rear (MT et street 275/50R15 on summit star).
Thanks all!

I run the 8-ply MT Sportsmans up front and Hoosier DR's in the rear on the street and strip without a problem. It's actually a nice, smooth ride on the street and works great at the track.

Cool, I have heard that running bias ply rear and radial front can cause problems, wondering if that would hold true the other way around. Thanks!

I had no problems doing it all season last year, you'll be fine with it.

4 ply tire is enough, the 8 ply tire is so heavy you mine as well leave your stock rims on the car.

That's not true. I have the metric 4 ply tires for the street and M/T Sportsmans 8ply for the track. The difference between them is maybe 3-5lbs. But I save 25lbs per each side when I switched to the skinnies. My stock rims were 17x8 with 245/45/17's on them. For a car that is over 3000lbs I'd use the 8ply. Others have used the 4ply on their F-bodies with no issues but I feel safer using the 8ply. You may make 1000 passes with the 4 ply but it only takes 1 pass and you could really F up your ride or life. I'm not a gambler so I'll go the safer route.

I hear where you've coming from, but for a referance here's some #'s

I know my stock ws6 wheels and tires were about 50 lbs a piece, the bogarts with a 4 ply sportsman was about 26 a piece, not too bad right?

I took the 4 ply sportsman tires off and put a set of DS2 moroso tires on, and the car lost another 25 lbs, 12.5 lbs oer tire! That to me is alot, now add anohter 5 lbs per tire for the 8 ply.

The way I look at a skinny, is that if you are gonna run them, you're takign the risk of losing control easier then you would with a regular tire, so there's risk anyway. The ds2 I went to are suppsoed to be for 3000 lb car,s mine's still about 3350 and I've had no issues with them not holding up the weight, or any of that.

Now I'm looking at an FI setup that's gonna put a bunch of weight in the nose, and I'm not about to take those tires off.

The 8-ply are definitely heavier than the 4-ply, but not as heavy as a stock wheel/tire combo. They are a compromise, but work well for street driving and still work well at the track. I drive my drag setup on the street full time as well as to and from the track (230 miles roundtrip) without a problem, so in that regard they work well.

Yes they do. I prefer a tire with the right weight load capacity, especially when it comes to the front. You know, the part that controls the steering.

you sarcastic bastid.

JL- I think I'll weigh both tires and see what the exact weight difference there is between my skinnies. Both on the same type of rims. I can't think there is a 12lb difference between them. It doesn't feel like it when I swap tires. Unless I'm just <Arnold Schwarenegger voice> "building my muscles up" </voice>

We did weigh them before they went on, unless I got some kind of extra heavy 4 ply or a really light set of ds-2's the tires alone were 12 lbs different ber tire.

It was alot, and belive me, I pick up one of the old 4 ply sportsman tires vs the bogart with the ds2 on it and it's scary how close the 2 feel in weight.

But, I'm 6'2 275 and can carry an engine block across a room and a th400 with the converter on up a flight of stairs (out of my basement, where I carried it down to alone) without a problem, so what I consider heavy and light is probably alot different then most.

I have no prob eating crow but if they are indeed 12lbs in difference then I will be doing the same swap as you and going to a bias-ply front. That is, if the tire can hold my weight within the manufactors limit. My car weighs 2950 without me.

My car's 3350 with me in it and a 1.4 tank of gas. Honestly, I don't even know what teh ds-2 is rated for, but I run them at 35 psi as reccommended, and they are doing fine, no bulging from the weight or anything like that.

Hell they took the front end coming down from a big wheelstand, no problems. Good tire IMO.
