Default 29.5 vs 28 in tire

Ok here is my current set up ...402 ls2 stroker w/m6 4.56 gears all the front & rear suspension i currently run a 28in tire. My question is im going to a th400 setup and keeping my 4.56's would the 28 be ok or will i have to go to a 29.5 ?
I just dont want to run out of gear and will i have to cut anymore away from my car to get them to fit I am stock height ..
thanks guys

You will have to trim the bumper cover to clear a 29"+ tire. How high RPM wise do you want to cross the finish line?

I am running a BBC with a 4:00 gear, similar stall to what you are looking at, 29x10.5W Hoosier (almost 30" diameter), with a Turbo 400 and go through around 6700-6800 rpm.

The 29 should be good. Just keep in mind that sometimes a convertor can cause the car to RPM a little different than expected, depending on how tight or loose it is.

I have a similar engine setup, and last year n/a with a 28 inch tall radial with a 5000 rpm converter that did have a 9.5% slippage in my 3500 lb car I was trapping around 126 to 127 and going thru the traps at about 6800, I had the shift light set there and it would just barely come on at the end of the track

Had I left the car n/a I was gonna put a set of 4:30's in the car with a 28x10.5S et drag that I went to anyway, I think a 4.56 would probably be on the edge with a 28 inch tire, with a 29.5 you should be fine with it.

I want to go to a 29.5s et drag, a set of 15x12 rims and go back to 4.10 gears (from the 3.73's that I changed to) in hopes to get the car to hook/leave better, and shorten the gearing just a touch, as 3.90's would have been perfect for where I am right now.

Those will take some more clearncing I'm sure of that, but they will fit.

I'm actually waiting for a new rim to get SFI certified, once they are I'm gonna order some 15x12 rear beadlock rims (and the matching fronts) and get a set of 29.5x10S et drags, mount them up, and then bring them to my fab guy with a set of wolfe minitubs and a set of wolfe adjustable spring perches, and tell him to make it fit, and sit 1 inch lower then the back does now while he's at it.

Gonna look slammed on that big tire, and it should leave alot better, lower the front down some more too, get the car nice and low (they don't stand up as much that way) and then hit it with a 300 shot

Why not run the 28's + 4.56 + TH400? Might be a nice combo.

One thing that a couple old school racers have told me time and time again, run the biggest tire you can, and the highest gear ratio that you can... and the car will always hook good and leave hard.

If you already have a set of 28 inch tires mounted up that you can try first, I would do that before buying the 29.5's, and see where you're at.. but if you need to buy tires, I'd fit the biggest ones you fit, get them on there right away and go from there.
