Default Rear Shock Adjustment Question

I did a search for rear shock adjustment and there is just too much stuff that has nothing to do with the answers I am looking for so I figured I'd start a thread.

From all that I have read and been told, you want the rear tight and the front loose in order to transfer weight and get a good launch. My question is, under what conditions and why would you loosen up the rear shocks? They come adjustable for a reason. I always find myself adjusting the fronts in order to keep my wheels down. I only have the 3 way comp engineering shocks in the back so it isn't like I can make small adjustments, but surely there must be a reason for them to be adjustable.

If the track is going away you may want to loosen them.

Same thing Steve said.....track is good keep tightening them up..track conditions poor loosen them up to soften the hit.

so if I understand correctly, tight will yield best et if the track is hooking. Looser will cost a little et but will hook better if track isn't working?

That is the theory. Understand, you mileage may vary. Every car wil act different. The tighter the shock is the harder it wil hit the tire. There are a ton of added variables that come into play as well. I.E. suspension, tire, wheel, air pressure, weight, weight transfer, launch, trans type.....

Agreed, this is the part where you need to learn the car, write down all your results and what you were doing, attatch the time slip and compare. They call it Test and Tune for a reason. I personally think you should go to a few 60-100 car rental days, get 5-10 runs and really get seat time.

That's sounds alot like work. This is just a street car.

Seriously though, I am fortunate in that I always hook. My worst case scenario is that my wheel stands are too high.

I am researching this for some friends that are traction challenged.
