Whats better less gear and taller tires? or more gear and shorter tires?

If you are only talking about gear and tire size run the taller tire and higher gear(numerically). Which gear is going to depend on the trans ratios, lock up vs non lock up, and converter.
The calculator will get you in the ballpark for the gear. It will only tell you if you are going to run out of RPM. There is much more going on than just top end RPM.
More wrong internet information. At least for an LT or LS.

Then I am sure they have decent 60's and lousy MPH. They may be making up for a poor converter choice or an engine that is down on power with more gear.
We have three LT/LS cars and none of them run that high a gear at any weight. They all have been or are record holders and will qualify in the top 5 at any race in the country.
5.14's were the gear of choice at the infancy of these cars. Testing found that other ratios worked better. I know of nobody who ran a higher gear than the 14.
Lets get back to the question.
Taller tire = More foot print Gear for the tire and test from there.

I'm a bit confused, is the original poster trying to decide between A. keeping less gear and pairing it with a tall tire, or B. going with more gear and keeping a smaller tire? Aren't those mismatched? I was under the impression that you want either A. less gear with a shorter tire, or B. more gear with a taller tire. With shallow gears, it is easier to get shorter tires moving faster and you'll get more RPM across the finish; it's hard to get the RPM up with 2.73s. Therefore, while I'm running with these numerically lower gears (2.73) then I'm sticking with the 26" tire instead of going to a 28" tire. Do I have it right or am I backwards?

Iv'e ran my bolt LT1 with 3.23, 3.42, 3.73, and 4.10 ratios. All with 26" drag radials. I saw ET and 60' improvements with no mph change, everytime I went to a lower gear ratio. Although I started having some traction issues with the 4.10's. If my new suspensions pieces don't help enough, I'll be changing to a 28" tire and a lower ratio, so that I keep my trap rpm in the same range.
There is very little differnence in drivability between a 3.73 and a 4.10. You probably wouldn't even notice a difference between 3.90 and a 4.10.

haha so true lol im honestly not even really "chasing" ur record nemore... i think once i get into the high 11's i might go a different route but im not sure yet
