Whats better less gear and taller tires? or more gear and shorter tires?
right now i have a bolt on only LT1 that i plan to keep bolt on only for a lil while, (im looking to go as fast as possible bolt on only) now my question is what would be faster? like a 4.10 gear with 27inch or 28inch tires? or like a 3.73 gear or 3.90 gear with 26inch tires? i just wanna see ur guys' opinions on which is better? more tire less gear or less tire more gear?
thx guys

It depends on what transmission you have and what RPM you are looking to trap at. The combo that puts you closer to the rpm you want to trap at will be the deciding factor. Also, it is said that more sidewall results in better traction.

id say the bigger tire with less gear. of course i have 3.70 gears and a 27" tire so i guess i went opposite of wat i think. but either way i think you'll be in the same rpm range at the top end. so i guess it depends on street driving and other uses for the car.

Tha taller tire will have a bigger footprint. One of the reasons alot of slicks are 31-33'' tall. Also as stated above, the bigger sidewall will usually 'absorb' the hit better and not be as prone to blow the tire off at the hit.

Bigger tire is gonna hoook better, but will also need more power to turn down teh track. It is a catch 22.
That being said, I would run teh taller tire. You look at teh stock eliminator guys running "stock" motors with 30" tall tires, and they do it for a reason.

I'd put a 28x9 et drag on the car and go up to a 4.10 gear, I bet a 4.30 with that tire ar your level would be great. The consistancey for what you're looking to do will be better, and that tire being about 27 inches tall will grow to about 28 on the top 1/2 and probably work well with the gear change.
At your power level you go putting a 28x10 or 29 on the car I think the added weight will hurt you more, even if you go to a 4.56 gear

I ran 28" 275/60/15's in my bolt-on car with every ratio from 3.73 to 4.56.
If your stuck with the 10-bolt stay with the 3.73/3.90 ratio's, there is more material to work with for gear strength and they will last longer. Get a better convertor and go with the 28" tall tire, a good convertor will make that combination shine. I've been low 1.50 60-foots with 117plus mph with 3.73's and the 28" tire

I was adding that to what you already said, not disagreeing/arguing with you. I realized after reading what I posted again that it came off wrong.
It seems to me that the taller tire and lower gear works great for them. I would run the taller tire and gear the car to cross at desired RPM. If I could run the 30" radial without piecutting the wheel well and rear bumper that's the tire I'd use.

It's cool. I did not take it as a disagreement or anything, and hope I did not come off in a bad way either. Hard to "judge" how people are over teh 'net, without actually seeing their face or hearing them....

its looking more and more like 3.90's would be the perfect gear for me...
redline rpm at 6000rpms with a 26" tire and 3.90's would put me around 118-119mph which is exactly what its gonna take to break or come close to the bolt on only record...
then when i want to spray the car i can just bump upto 28" tires and it will put me around 128mph which is enough to break the FI only record (i believe its at 10.60's)
also 3.90's is much more streetable then say 4.10's or 4.56's...
now it would be sweet to find a 3 channel 10 bolt with 3.90's already installed lol

Iv'e ran my bolt LT1 with 3.23, 3.42, 3.73, and 4.10 ratios. All with 26" drag radials. I saw ET and 60' improvements with no mph change, everytime I went to a lower gear ratio. Although I started having some traction issues with the 4.10's. If my new suspensions pieces don't help enough, I'll be changing to a 28" tire and a lower ratio, so that I keep my trap rpm in the same range.
There is very little differnence in drivability between a 3.73 and a 4.10. You probably wouldn't even notice a difference between 3.90 and a 4.10.
