Default Traction: Wider or Taller??

1st what is the widest tire that can go on these cars without a tub?? 2nd, what is better for traction going wider or going taller? Or is there any math to it ex: 1 inch taller = 1.5 inch wider ect?? Here is an example of 2 different tire sizes, all things equal which would hook better?? Any pros/cons to either??

26 x 12 (12" treadwidth) or 27 x 10 (10" treadwidth)

Ever body will differant responces on this, But for me i like wider ,I run a Hoosier DR. 335/35/17 its around 14" wide and hooks like glue,But alot has to do with gearing . i have 4:30 gears

But is probably loads heavier than a 28x10.5x15 on a set of Welds.

Tons of other variables to take into effect. Taller also changes your final drive, effectively.

Like said above , there so many thing that has to be counted for, shift points, gear ratio, hp, torque,weight of car, suspension. ect. But for me, im on the street alot and like my 17" wheels that i had widened and the front narrowed and theres not alot to choose from in that rim height, If i drag raced alot, I think a 28" or 29" tall in a 15" rim, for more side wall to help take the shock at the starting line.

Taller means more tire run-out which equals more effective traction.

Taller will work better. The lenth of the footprint will increase more this way, width wise you can really only go to about a 11.5 inch wide tire (going off the size on the slick, ex. 28x11.5) without doing major work, or having the tires stick out alot.

No need for much taller then a 28 though unless you're trying to make 1xxx hp... there's alot of cars that have been well into the 7's on 28x10.5 slicks... look at how fast people are going on the little 275 drag radial now, should be ab attestment that if the car is set right you don't need a massive tire to get the job done.

28x10.5 slick, start with that and you should be in good shape. If it doesn't work.... change something becuase it should.

I was told by a m/t rep that on a stick car a wider tire with the same size foot print as a tire that is taller and narrower will perform better. I have no personal expeiance to back it up, but his car is a stick car.

I know a few years back Rodney had real good luck with 28x10.5W on his stick car.

Will a 28 self clearance itself on the rear bumper if it doesn't clear?? M and H says his tires only grow 1/2 inch. I just don't want to have to cut the rear cover. Also, havibng 4:10's will the 28 hurt me in any way??

That's interesting. I would think a stick car would need the height to take the "shock" of a clutch dump more than the width.

having more sidewall definitely helps. for example a 26" tall, 10" wide tire on a 15" rim will work alot better than the same size tire on a 17" rim. you say you have a stick car, you may want to try the 28x10.5S. i have heard good results from people using the stiff sidewall on a stick car.

I plan on running tubes to stiffen the sidewall so that should help out the 27's if I go that route. My biggest concern on the 28 is killing my gear.

The 2.66 first gear in our cars is not the best for drag racing combine that with a 4.11 gear and you have a ton of wheel speed you are trying to control at launch. Most of the stick car racers try to shoot for a 15:1 launch ratio. 1st gear X rear gear = launch ratio. Your 4.11's put you at 10.9.

I'm not saying your current setup won't work just trying to give you options to look at. Really I have just been doing a ton or research here lately cause I'm stuck at the house on the weekends instead of being able to go racing.

FWIW I went 11.0 cam only with 4.11's and 28's. The 60's werent all that great but I didn't have very good parts out back either.

With having the pontiac version did you still need to cut the rear for the 28's? I seen a guy do that once and hacked it up all to hell and promised myself I would never do that to my stuff.

28's fit with very minor rubbing on my car, I did have to roll the lip on the fender though.

Roll the fenders with 28 x 10.5 15's? What backspacing are your wheels? 7.5??

Also, I just figured with the 28's that would equate to a 3.90 gear and make the launch equation from above lower than the 10.9

My car has always been kind of low I guess. It was only a problem when I would street drive the car. That was with 8" wheels 5.5 bs. Now I'm tucking tire on 10" wheels and 7.5 bs with a stock width housing. I don't know if that can be done with a camaro though.

The launch ratio only takes into account the gear ratios. Gear it deep and put enough tire on it to get through the traps or just turn more rpm's.
