LS1 based 370 or LS2 based 4XX?
I'm in the market to either build or buy a new/used short block. My '00 Z28 is currently a cammed/sprayed 6spd with a 9" and MT 275 DR's. I have a built/braked/RMVB TH350 sitting in the garage with a PI 4000 stall that I may throw in for race season but I like having a very fun street car as well. I have a stand alone fuel system and plate kit for the N2O on an LS6 intake but would like to go much bigger so the new build needs to be a forged aluminum motor capable of taking a big hit. I would like to use L92 heads but hear they may not be the best for FI or N2O. A carb style intake is not out of the question either as I have a VFN Sunoco hood on the car for either an air cleaner or elbow. What are your thoughts, and what parts would you use? Also, PM me if you have anything for sale. I'm located in South TX.

It really just depends on what your overall goal is. Some folks may be hesitant to respond because this kind of topic has been beaten to death. I don't post a whole lot here. Just more of an information seeker but you must first figure out your overall goal. There are so many ways to do certain things with these fbodys now it's unreal.

It sounds like your car is where mine was a couple years ago. Like, almost exactly. I was running 5.3 heads/cam with an LS6 intake and a 200 shot running 10.0's@133 like clockwork. This was footbraking a FMVB TH350 with a 1.31 60ft on radials. This all depends what heads and cam you have. You can still have fun with the TH350 on the street, just gets annoying on the highway. Get a good cooler for that thing, and all will be well.
After the LS6, I went with a vic jr and an elbow. I wasn't a huge fan of it, but still went 10.0's @ 136. I tried to get aggressive with the tune, and was trying to use a wet plate with the elbow. Head gasket popped.
Also, if you switch to a single plane, you need to think about a new cam.
In other words....You can get it done without having a big cubed motor.

If the prices of the builds are about the same I think I would rather go with a 400+CI setup. I did a few searches on this topic but so many threads popped up that didn't have anything to do with "which way to go?" so post a link if you find any threads that would be of value to me.

The prices between a iron block 370 vs. 408 is the crank ($1000) everything else is the same on cost. A ls2 aluminum block will cost more if you have to get a block then factor in the rotating assembly.

I want to build a pump gas street motor so I'm shooting for around 11.5:1. I would also like to use an aluminum block. I have heard the LS2 and LS3 blocks are more than capable of supporting 750HP to the wheels on spray and 550ish N/A with good internals and fasteners. I will be building this over time so if anyone has any parts laying around or projects they cannot finish please PM me.

if funds allow a 416/418 ls3 is a great option. block is strong and will hold up under pretty high hp. of course with that many cubes you will need a good set of heads and a bigger stick, 102/102 blah blah blah to take advantage of the extra air that will be needed.

You can get a 416 ls3 shortblock for about $4k. And is a GREAT platform for what your trying to accomplish.
I was looking at going with the LS3 (N/A-Pump gas) 427 Stroker with TFS 235's. I would PM SDPC and see what they say.
Or Texas Speed can hook you up too!
Good Luck!
IMO, theres no replacement for displacement.
But the cool factor is when you can make a small cubed engine run the same as larger cubed engines.

I have been thinking about the same thing. Have you seen Al Harbi's car? Search for it on youtube. He's got a built LS3 6spd with n2o and his car looks like a blast! I think he put down almost 800hp on a 200 hit. I'd love to have a fun street car like that and put the braked TH350 in for a season or two.

Yeah I just saw that the other day. It looks like he runs with the best of them in that car too!
It's definentely in my to do lists as we speak. Just gotta finish all the other stuff first, and Then I will do another motor build. But the 427 is prolly what I am going to go with.

The difference is this...
427 LS3 is 4.100" Stroke Crank and a 4.070" Bore
416/418 LS3 has a 4.067"/4.070" Bore and a 4.000" Stroke Crank
The 416/418 is better for boost or 150+hp of Nitrous
But the 427 is better for N?A or up to 150hp of nitrous
Check out www.texas-speed.com for their prices as well.

Not sure where you're located, but my whole motor is for sale. Link in my sig. It's a solid piece that I'm only parting ways with to make room for a gear driven supercharger setup....
Price wise you won't be able to duplicate it for less then 2.5 times what I'm asking.... shoot me a PM if you're interested.

I honestly would love to put something together with your motor but its got to be something pump gas and street friendly. I have been thinking about it quite a bit but I'll keep my eyes open. I'm in S. TX BTW.
