Default Battery Shut Off Switch, Does it need to be Visible for NHRA rules?

Im needing to relocate my battery, I broke the hold down last week at the track, so perfect time to get it done. I was planing on getting the Afco Box and mounting it were the spare tire is. My Question is, Do you have to have a shut off Switch Visible. I hate the look of them and was wanting to put it under the truck area. Also is locating it were I want, legal?

Thanks!!

yes it needs to be visible...in case track personnel have to shut off power due to a crash, etc...

I have mine mounted on the very top of the exhaust tip cutout.
Not sure if this is a good idea with a full exhaust.
Hard to see in this pic but mine isn't real noticable, especially with the valence blacked out.

Get a second taillight from a junkyard, drill a hole, and place the rod through there. When you leave the track, unscrew the rod, replace the regular taillight, and you're good to go.

The battery was already in the trunk on my Cobalt SS and I didn't need a cutoff switch to pass tech? The rule to me should be mandated for a certain ET and not tied to the relocation of the battery. I do like the tail light idea though.

.

I believe the rule says something like easily visible??

We've been through this before, especially with new cars,
you really need an external cut off at any ET.
It's very easy to get knocked silly, if not because you are fast,
but you might be lined up next to guys like me.
We crash or get loose all the time.
A small fire does not need the pump feeding it a full tank of fuel while you sit there with your bell rung.

Exactly, you have no control over the guy in the other lane. I've seen some crazy **** happen with cars crossing the center line.

I read it has to be between the frame rails so you could run it out by your license plate and then just unscrew the rod when you're not at the track.

$h!t, I hope not. I just installed mine on the outside of the frame rail.

I plan taking the push rod out and put a plug (painted the body color) in when I am street driving.

I've seen a bunch like yours. If they are illegal, they have not said anything to the guys I know.
I think they want the switch to be in the same general area as everyone else.
They do not want them coming out of the quarters, so they word it like that???

I don't believe it is required inside the frame rails, but the rulebook did change a few years back as certain people ran them to the outside RH/LH side of the quarter panel (the book says they must exit at a rear facing position).

This is from a little while ago. I think 2008. The battery itself must be fastened to the frame rails some how.

8:1 BATTERIES
All batteries must be securely mounted. Must be of sufficient
capacity to start vehicle at any time. Batteries may not be relocated
into the driver or passenger compartments. Rear firewall of .024-
inch steel or .032-inch aluminum (including package tray) required
when battery is relocated in trunk. In lieu of rear firewall, battery
may be located in a sealed .024-inch-steel, .032-inch-aluminum, or
NHRA-accepted poly box. If sealed box is used in lieu of rear
firewall, box may not be used to secure battery and must be
vented outside of body. Relocated battery(s) must be fastened to
frame or frame structure with a minimum of two 3/8-inch-diameter
bolts. (“J” hooks prohibited or must have open end welded shut.)
OEM-located batteries without complete OEM hold-down hardware
must be secured to OEM battery box/tray using the same 3/8-inchdiameter-
bolt hold-down method described in previous sentence.
Metal battery hold-down straps mandatory. Strapping tape
prohibited.

Do you have any pics of the install like you described? I bought my camaro with the battery relocated and I went to the track last week and they told me to get a disconnect as well. Is there any different styles that are better for F bodies? Where is the bet to get one? Summit, Jegs?
