If you are renting a trailer from U-Haul it'll probably have the centrifugal brakes in the tongue so there's no need for an electric brake controller in the truck. My 2000 GMC 1500 5.3 tows my 18' open trailer all over Missouri, been from KC to Tulsa, St. Louis, and Chicago many times without any problems! My truck has a tow/ haul mode and like JL said turn the OD off so it doesn't downshift at every hill.

Yeah, well I have been thinking about driving mine down (its made this trip many, many times) but could be a hassle since my dad is not home with his truck in case something happened. It would just be a cool factor to add to the shootout.

If you have a trailer and truck lined up I wouldnt risk it.

I picked up the truck yesterday. Its not the prettiest thing but will do the trick. Its actually a 6ft bed but the thing looks bigger like a 2500 for some reason. I just gotta change a u joint tonight and should be good to go(my cost to borrow it). Trailer is from Route 12 rental and they have centrifugal trailer brakes.

You'll be fine. Your car is pretty light. I tow my junk with my tbss and it's tow rating is a lot less than your buddy's dodge and mine pulls great. Just make sure your buddy have a good brake controller.
