Default Bolt in vs weld in chromoly cage

I'm pretty sure that I'm going to do the chromoly bolt in. I like the fact that it is ready to go. I don't have to take my interior apart to weld and paint, plus the bolt in is powder coated. What's your thoughts?

Technically, it's not NHRA legal, though... You'd have to weld all the bars to the main hoop to make it legal.

You still have to pull the carpet up since you can't bolt through the carpet. OTOH, since I've been working on getting my Wolfe installed, I can say that I wish I had gone bolt in and the rear bars that land above the gas tank. Welding 1/8" plate to the floor is a b*tch! So is forming 1/8" plate to fit the right rear wheel well.

I would think for the weld-in you would want the bars over the gas tank, you have to pull the tank to do the bolt in. I am much better with a drill then a welder so the decision is obvious for me

I'm just going with a 5 point bolt in chrome moly, the only bars that needs to be welded are the two down bars and that can be done quick if your track questions it.

I suspect you might want to drop the tank even if welding. Welding to the fender well caused the sound deadener on the inside to melt and drip, and even catch fire. Can't believe I used to do this crap for a living ...

I'm going to pull the tank for welding the bars above it. Would had to **** up a weld and drip some nice hot red steal into my plastic gas tank

Thats true, didnt know if there was sound deadening under there or not (wasnt on mine over the tank, just paint), I'm thinking on my car I have an access panel cut out for the pump and I would just stick a piece of metal between the floor and tank where the weld was.

If you blew through the sheetmetal welding I guess that wouldnt be good either The two f-body cages I seen here a local guy did were welded and I know he didnt drop the tank - probably never realized the gas tank was right under there..

I just did the very boltin install you are discussing and welded the back bars down. I also cut the window for the intank fuel pump change. Here is a link with pictures. https://ls1tech.com/forums/drag-racing-tech/132757-pics-rollbar-install.html There is no room to stuff a fire blanket or a piece of metal to gaurd the tank from burn through, trust me i looked at everthing I went ahead and welded it anyway. But belive me im not a weekend warrior with a mig gun I have many years of welding experience this is not for the faint of heart.

A full tank would burn, but not blow. I used to freak people by flipping a lit cigarette into a can of gas. However, and empty one _will_ blow. So will an oil pan

Amen to that, brother. I haven't welded in 30 years or so, but I've done a lot of welding back in the day. It came back, but I almost wish I had farmed it out.

I wasnt talking about it blowing up, I dont know if a mig ball would melt all the way through the plastic or not It would suck to have a couple holes melted in it..

I blew up my first oil pan brazing a steel rod to a dented SBC oil pan to try to pull the dent out (I did it driving it over a rack that wasnt down all way). Great idea except I drained the oil and back in the old days with chokes and stuff there was a lot of fuel in with the oil - that was 25 years ago and I still remember it like it was today. Had to replace every gasket for free

I remember how the radiator shop used to clean out gas tanks before they fixed them in the shop next to ours, he would take the gas cap off and hold a torch across the filler neck untill it stopped shooting out flames - scared the crap out of me the first time I seen it

I don't know either. Might depend on how much your drop - like if you blow a 3/8" hole in the floor or ???

Hey, another old guy! We used to use CO2 to purge gas tanks and oil pans.

I'm not old, just chronologically challenged

When you are a 16 year old kid and you just smashed a customer's oil pan into the pickup at 5:30 PM on a -5 degree Chicago evening, purging with CO2 never crossed my mind
