Default Are Cut-Outs worth it ?? / Where to install it ?

I'm a h/c guy and I'm trying to get as much as I can from my set-up. So far ,my exhaust set-up consits of SLP LT's w/ gutted SLP Catz and Stock SLP Dual-Dual Cat-back . I was wondering are cut-outs really worth installing and how much of a gain on the track do you h/c guys see from opening it up ? Also ,where the best place to mount it ?

Please post pics if you like.

I gained 17rwhp on the dyno. Tested back to back open and closed. Always had it open at the track. Best place is under the passenger rear seat to place it.

Had one on mine too, under the rear passenger seat.
Lost 7rwhp no cutout VS closed cutout.
Gained 10rwhp cutout open vs closed.
I was lowered at the time and kept breaking e-cutouts so I got rid of it.

It's great if you want to be loud though.

First pull is cutout closed, second is open Of course this is a h/c car through a stock catback. Heres a couple pics FM merge to 4" cutout and then back down to stock.

Nice setup, that's along the lines of what I want to switch to in the near future.

Having the least restrictions or the free-est flowing exhaust is the most ideal, so as long the car is tuned for it. This will lead to the best possible way of making power.

But I offer a different spin in that depending on the circumtances, that extra 5-20 RWHP is nice but do we really need it, or is it worth it? Some might say, anything 1 hp or more is "worth it" and thats not what I am talking about.

Simply put you are increasing noise not only outside, but inside the cabin for which some people can be very annoying, especially if they have no on demand control of the sound (i.e. elec cut out).

Having used cut outs for years I heard someone remark about how a car could make ALL that noise and be "slow". It got me thinking and was it worth it to have all that extra noise for maybe a 1 tenth, 1 mph gain. I don't really know.

When I was younger, a WOT blast with a cut out fully open was cool but I guess taste changes.

It really all depends on what you want and to be honest there are many cat backs that have very little in restrictions but you get good idle and under throttle sound.

Mine is a different perspective.

A 32 hp gain is pretty damn good !! btw , thanks for the picture, Detroit . The cut-out looks nice and tucked away in that spot. I may get a stainless steel one from WS6store.com $45.00 bucks.

Very well said ,BSM . I'm in my 40's and I understand your opinion ,but it's still pretty cool to open up your exhaust and get and extra .2-.3 tenths and 2-3mph more if you are lucky to get that much.

I'll have to make a video of my setup, its actually pretty quiet with the cutout closed which is great because I sometimes drive my car to work and that means leaving at 5:45am and I'm sure my neighbors wouldn't be too friendly if it were real loud. Now when its open it sounds downright nasty.

Man,that thing sounds nasty !! I love it !! Thanks DetroitMuscle. That electronic dump really makes it easy with a flip of a switch. How much ET drop have you seen with it open vs closed ? I think I will go the electronic cut-out route myself if I do it .

One time this year at the track I lost a muffler... I took the other one off too since I wanted to see if it would pick up. Virtually identical times/mph.
It's an American Thunder 2.5" system from Flowmaster which has an H-pipe. Don't know how it compares to your system though.

It really depends on the efficiency of your current system. I picked up 6rwhp and 6rwt with mine. I have Pace Lts, ory, Magnaflow Catback. My brother picked up almost 40rwhp, he has Pace LTs, ory, stock 99 TA catback. Also depends on what you are looking for, just NA you saw my results but on spray I would definitely have one because you want to get rid of the exhaust as quickly as possible.

I had cutouts on my old setup 5.7L with 1 3/4in tri y headers, 2.5in system.
i thought they are awesome on it so i put them on my new build LSX454 2in headers with twin 3in exhuast i put them just after the cats like last time but now it is stupidly loud atleast 2x louder than the old cutouts, i'll do a dyno comparison this thursday open v's closed i dont think it will show a gain as my system has very little resriction as it is, and im 100% taking them off after i dyno and drag race it once, way way too loud this time round.

Also dont know if you guys get it but i often find myself pressing the close button as i often hear leaks from it, i think i might have to look at how i put them on. It might be backwards and the exhuast pressure is forcing them open.
i know there is no front/back to them but there should be for this reason so exhaust gases dont force them open a little.

I agree it probably won't make much difference on a nice free flowing catback but mine might just be restrictive enough to do something at the track. Only time will tell.
