I've been thinking about getting rid of my PS and getting a manual rack. Just wasn't sure how bad it was going to be.

I'm running a looped rack with the factory salad shooters on the car. It's not the most friendly setup on the street, as expected with the power assist ratio and no power it's going to be stiff at slow speeds. It makes parking interesting but since I don't drive my car every day it's tolerable, for now anyway. A manual rack and skinnies will be in the works very soon.
I do wonder though if you were to pull the factory rack apart and loose some of that fluid and the seals if it would become easier.

Arise from the dead! Is it any easier/tolerable with an actual manual rack and say a 235-255/16 tire? I like the thought of weight lost and less clutter under the hood, but wonder what it is like driving with a manual rack and not a factory looped.

I remember seeing somewhere on tech someone mentioned they were going to get their manual rack installed and then go drive around with their 275/17 combo, did that ever happen, did they ever report back?

I saw this post back up so figured I might be able to help. I have a full Spohn front end (see bottom) and steering rack with the stock Ws6 wheels and 275/40 tires up front. It's a little tight in a parking lot where you might need to make a Y turn, otherwise not bad at all. When I can put skinnies on, it will be a breeze...

I have this and skinnies and it isn't bad at all.

It also helps that I have the lightest wheels on the market.

Nope, they never reported back. I just posted on that thread tonight.

I am curious to see how the inexpensive Rack Doctor Rack setup works for people on the street.

I have the rack doctor setup. Its a little tough to turn my street wheels but the skinnys arent bad, even from a stop. Obviously not as easy as ps, but a lot mire managable than a looped stocker.
