Proper/Best way to set up PCV system ?

Good info in this thread. I've heard that some people have tried using the electric air pump thats on the car for a vacuum pump. I've also heard that it fails often due to the oil coating it. Any opinions on this idea?

The electric pump does have a problem with the oil... the pump gets the oil in it and it will have issues... I tried that with a couple cars utilizing the AIR pump that cars come with, tried using a catch can before the pump, tried an inline filter which caught the oil, but stopped the pump from pulling any vacuum.
It's a good idea, but I never got it to work right and be in a situation that wasn't going to kill the pump.

just talked to my tuner, he said the vaccume will definetly help....he hooked up just the ls1 style AIR pump, on a WOT switch and it got him a MPH...but he keeps a few spares because they dont like the oil like you said....but he thought it would deffinetly pickup with a vaccume pump on my motor ATLEAST 1 mph which goes along with the 15ish horsepower everyone has been saying

It's possible.
I never really got any track results with the electric pumps... I tried with 2 to get that to work, and killed both driving around before I ever got to the track with them
Putting it on a WOT switch I never did though, just had it on/off..... if I had the WOT switch on there they might have lasted alot longer.

the WOT switch is deffinetly a good idea for an electric system like that, I think im going to just try to swing the fully setup GZ kit, made for street setup that wont wearout....it is a completly sealed system with adjustable vacuum that caps the ls1 oilcap and thats where the adjuster is....i will cap the dipstick tube and make sure everything is sealed perfectly and also get a vacuume guage and mount it inside so i know im not going over 15, ill try to set it at 12 at WOT....i HOPE that gets me atleast 10 to the ground

Good way to go about it. Just get a ga. on the car, and when you're at the dyno doa little testing to see where you have to set the relief to in order to get your desired vacuum (providing that's how they are setting that particular system up)
Someday down the road when you build a motor, you'll have that piece of the puzzle already and won't have to worry about it... like when you buy my 408 I have for sale

yeah right with that motor my car would flip over backwards and land on teh roof
Do you have any testing with a kit such as the GZ ? if it got me 1 mph like what i have heard i would be a happy camper !

I might look into doing one. I'm still running a PCV with a little oil -air seperator. I disconnected the fresh air going from the valve covers to the T-body and installed a breather. I've still have the air pump stored in my shop. The wot switch and only using it at the track might work .

so i was told to run 12 in of vaccume with this pump at WOT....also i talked to my dad's engine builders and they said that it could rob some things of oil, is this true ? or only when you run to much vaccume...said it could lower oil pressure...
Plan is to get an Oil pressure guage and Vaccume guage in the cab anyone else chime in please

The vacuum will lower oil pressure, and that is the reason you don't want to run too much vacuum.
I would say 12 in MAX on a stock motor with stock clearances.
If you had a race motor, high volume pump with additional oil volume in the pan, looser clearances and you were running a thicker oil as most race cars do (like 20-50, something you can't do with a stock engine) then you could get away with alot more vacuum.
I would personally limit it to 10 in, that is enough so that it's doing what you want it to do and shouldn't be pulling oil/stopping oil from getting to all the places it should.
I would run an oil pressure ga yes, and the vacuum guage I would hook up to the valve cover so you can see what the pressure inside the engine is... And when you initially set it up, make sure you aren't pulling too much!
A neat test, would be to have the PCV hooked up, pump on and no belt on it, make a dyno pull, then in the 5 minutes it would take to cap the intake and the pcv connections, pull it and hook the pump up and make another pull, see what you actually gain from it... and please post that dyno sheet.
Then we can see what it really got ya, something that I don't believe I have seen on here as of yet.

i think if i get an oil pressure guage...stick to 10lbs of vacuum, and a vacuum guage i should be set...and i change my oil every 2000 miles so that should help the situation. As long as the horsepower makes up for the 12lbs on the nose ill be happy , i hate adding weight
