Default Why is my th400 running so hot? UPDATE 6-27-11 Page 5

I have a RMVB TH400. It has a transbrake and was just recently rebuilt with all new clutches, sprags etc etc. The xmsn has run hot since putting it in. It has a B&M deep pan it also has a B&M plate and bar cooler that is mounted infront of the radiator now. It is fed thru stainless steel braided lines. I have a xmsn tempature gauge that is in the pan. The converter is a FTI unit that was custom spec'd for my build. Car is a forged 370, tc78 turbo and a MWC rear with a 3.00 gear and a 28" tire.

Car sees 200+ within ten minutes of driving. I have had the ccooler in two other places and it does the same thing. I just installed a 9" fan on it tonight but haven't wired it up yet.

Why is this car getting so hot? With all of the provisions that i have for it cooling it just doesn't want to stay cool. The converter is pretty loose on the other hand.

Cooler more than likely isn't big enough. Had the same problem with Th-350. Put a bigger cooler on it with a dedicated fan just for it and problem solved.

It's 12x10x2 B&M plate and bar cooler. I hope this fan fixes the problem.

Believe me when I say, that may not be a big enough cooler for street driving....

Derale sells a double pass cooler with a fan on it already. That one I have had good luck with. We wire up the fan, so that when the car's IGN is on the fan is running too, fwiw.

Usually enough to keep stuff under 200 even with extended periods of driving, and if that isn't enough for you, look at your local area junk yard for a diesel pickup... you can get a cooler out of that, and as long as you can get it in the car in front of the radiator, you will NEVER have another problem. They are a bit overkill... but work. Usually hold a quart to 2 quarts worth of fluid too, fwiw.

i run a 7x11x3/4 inch tranny cooler with a th400 and a 4500 stall and 4.11 gears and it runs at about 140 -160 and if its stop and go it gets to about 170/180. wonder if you should try a thinner cooler, so the air can get through it easier.

I'll have to look around if this fan doesn't help it. Thanks for the help everyone.

Dude mine used to run hot until I relocated the cooler away from my a/c condenser and radiator. I used a B & M Trans Cooler with these dimensions:

Racing Transmission Cooler Only
29,200 GVW
29,200 BTU
11'' x 11'' x 1-1/2''
No Kit Available
130-70274

I put my Tran cooler on the front left side of the FMIC opening. It has about 4 inches between it and the FMIC piping and sticks out a bit to catch air. I would rather not have it there but with that front-end that was the only place I could find to put it. Now it is nice and cool around 180* to 190* on a hot day in FL.

Interested in a solution to this also. Mine gets above 200* also. This is how mine is mounted and it still gets hot.

^^ wow that is "f" up..in theory open like that with a fan seems that it should be quite cool!! however..i would bet at a stand still the fan does what it should,..is it possible that while moving faster than the fan speed that its actually deflecting air away?? maybe like a turbulance of a sort?..im certainly interested on that..

Is there any possibility that you don't have enough fluid in the tranny, or the temp. sending unit, or the ga. is no good?

That is why I cut that area out of my bumper. It was getting hot so I figured I would give it a direct line of air and see what happens. I have a SLP SS grill to cover the hole up if I can get it to stay cool with the grill installed.

Don't know if this was to me or not, but I will answer as to my situation. Fluid is full, sending unit is good (brand new one), gauge works fine since I went to a digital so I could see the exact temps. The sending unit is in the return line right after the cooler where it should be seeing the coolest temps going back to the tranny. That is what worries me the most...If the temps get above 200-230* in the cooler return...What are they getting in the tranny?

My setup is different than the OP though. My PTC converter is a loose 8" 5500 stall built for max-effort NA.

A 5500 converter is going to generate alot of heat. I had a 5200 9 inch deal that used to get the tranny pretty hot when I ran my car n/a. The nitrous converter never made the heat the other one did, even going a full second faster.

I added the fan and although it helped it still did not fix the overtemp issue. I am ordering a 23x8.5x1.25 cooler to put up there with two fans. If that doesn't work I'll blow it up.

I mounted mine toward the back of the car away from the radiator on everything I do. Old trucks, cars, and my F-body stuff. All of the automatic stuff get that treatment.

I run 2 B&M 70274s on the front of my radiator, my trans temps have been a stable 180-200 (return), getting to the high side of that range going up a hill or brisk accelerating. I turn over 3000 rpm almost all of the time driving on the street.

oh, it's a spragless 8" converter, goes 5700+

I know the trans coolers are working because I can't keep my coolant temps below 210 on the freeway.

I'm going to order another cooler and fan. Hopefully that will bring the temps down.
