The fuse will function properly on either side of the battery. Common practice in general is to fuse on the + side for all circuits, and I don't know/care what the rulebooks say pertaining to racing. They might have a rule regarding it.

I used a ford solenoid in trunk next to battery...12" of wire from + side to switch, 16" of wire to noid, 13' or so to starter.
This way, using the solenoid, the wire to the starter in only hot during cranking.

I've always in the past fused the hot side. Then I saw a wiring diagram with the negative side fused. Now thinking about, being a DC circuit, that might be the best place for it. You have to have a ground from the battery or nothing on the car will work.

IF you plan to hit the dragstrip with the battery in the trunk; the disconnect is a must.
IF you ran the alt. wire to the starter, the switch won't work.
