Rear mounted coolant recovery tank ideas
On my project, (a 1963 Plymouth Valiant) I have always run a NON recirculating catch can behind the axle run up to the radiator VIA 3/8 aluminum line. That way if I have a head gasket blow, (or other catastrophic failure) that pressurizes the coolant system, I dont drive THROUGH it. Now that im making the car more streetable and running a milder pump gas LS I want to make a recirculating set up, but still keep the OVERFLOW behind the axle.
I currently have a standard 1 quart can that you puke it into the top and has a petcock in the bottom to drain. So heres my question. Can I leave the petcock open and attach the aluminum 3/8 line from the radiator to the can and leave the top of the catch can open to let it breathe?
OR, do I need to run a recirculating tank up by the radiator, run from the radiator into the bottom of it, and out the top and back to my tank in the rear? Any thoughts? Thanks, Eric L
