Default Trailblazer ss vs. Silverado ss tow vehicle

Ok, I was not sure where to post this, but I figured alot of you guys on here are towing your cars to the track. I'm looking for your opinons on what would you guys prefer to tow a full weight camaro on an open trailer with, a trailblazer ss or a silverado ss. Right now I currently own a 2007 trailblazer ss as my weekend driver and a 2001 4 banger s10 as my commuter vehicle. It keeps crossing my mind to sell both and buy a silverado ss and commuter car like a honda civic, this way I'll have a pickup truck/fun to drive/ tow vehicle, and I"ll have a car that gets 30+ mpgs compared to the 23 mpgs my slow s10 gets. I would like to see what you guys think, because I keep jumping back and forth, thanks.

Never used a TB as a tow vehical... but a 5.3L 2000 1500 Silverado and now a 6.0L 2500HD 2005 Silverado.
Both towed fine but the 2500 is better with the 4.10's,6.0L, and heavier tow/haul capacities.
With the TB you'll be close to the limits (6000# rated ? and car/trailer combo at 5000+)

Unless you want to look into an older truck ... get Historic tags ...do a carb'd LS swap with a OD tranny ... and only use on weekends Just another idea.

Ha Ha I do like that idea. Maybe some day.

I know the silverado ss is rated at 7000lbs which is 1000lbs more then the tbss and both trucks have a 6.0l with 4.10 gears.

Ive got a 2000 1500 5.3 4x4 and i tow my camaro in a 24ft enclosed trailer it done ok with it gets about 12mpg going down the highway at 65 only downfall to it is it is a heavy trailer and it needs some up grated leaf springs or airbags to help with the heavy load

IMO you'll like towing with the silverado better than the trail blazer.
The extra wheelbase will really help tame the handling of a load better.
And the silverado's don't seem to have nearly as many electrical issues as the trail blazer.

Yeah figured I would like towing with a silverado better but I have read on here that plenty of people do tow with the tbss, and it is so much fun to drive, not sure if a silverado ss would be as much fun. I'm worried that of I do sell it I'll regret it.

dont the silverado ss get even worse mpgs than the tbss

I know this isnt what you asked but have you thought about getting a diesel truck for fun and daily driving . I have quite a few friends with modded trucks that do high 12 low 13s and get 22 mpgs highway ?

I have thought about a deisel, but then i would need commercial plates, so then I wouldn't be allowed to drive on the parkways which I drive on everyday. Plus deisel by me is a dollar more per gallon then gas, and I like the low sleek look of the ss appose to the big and tall deisels.

Get a 2nd Gen Cummins and call it a day. Anyone how thinks that a 1500 Chevy or a trailblazer pulls a trailer well has never pulled a trailer with a Diesel truck. In my 95 Cummins I get 30-32 mpgs on the highway and mid 20s mixed driving. And I guarantee you that it will pull a trailer better and cost quite a bit less than a SS silverado or tbss.

My truck has a 4" turbo back with no muffler, big air filter, cranked stock governor springs (revs ~3000rpms), blocked off waste gate (builds 37# boost), and runs really safe EGTs all the time, even pulling hills with a loaded trailer. I love driving that big old truck but it gets old being a extended cab long box. If you got a regular cab long box it would be prefect for a DD/tow vehicle.

Fuel may cost more, but you get better mileage so it ends up about the same IMO.

And you don't need commercial plates with a 2500 truck. You can put C class plates on it and be fine pulling a loaded car trailer. Here in Wisconsin we can run XD plates on a DD without penalty.

Diesels are the bomb for car hauling, its very comfortable and no issues. The few buddies I know that haul their racing vehicles with their Silvy 1500s say its not that bad, its easy to drive according to them.

Well you don't live in New York, so you shouldn't say what plate's he needs. If he gets a 2500 anything in new york, it will weigh over the 5500 or 5700 lb limit. Which means he will have to either lie on his form about having a camper top, stove, seatbelts, etc. in the back, or register commercial. All has to do with parkways.... I have two 2500's, and a 3500 drw, and live in this awful state, I've tried everything. We get penalized for everything here.

Get the longest, heaviest built truck possible for towing, it will always handle the weight better... Towing with a trailblazer SS would never even cross my mind, yes people do it, but it's not really made for it.

Yeah I didn't want lie on my registration. If i ever get pulled over with anything in the bed i'm screwed. It seems that everyone agrees on the truck being the better tow vehicle. I just hope I can mod one to be as fun to drive as much as my tbss.

Just get a Silvy SS and put a turbo kit on it. It will pull like a diesel and get just as good fuel economy.

I tow with a awd tbss. With an open trailer and my 3300 lb camaro, I barely notice it is there. It has plenty of power. The self leveling air suspension in the rear is real nice. I have also towed a 28ft enclosed with my camaro in it. It had plenty of power to do it but the tongue weight made it a little unstable. As long as you have a weight distributing hitch and proper weight sway bars the tbss will be fine.

Sorry I blew up, maybe you should move if it sucks that bad. A silvy SS would probably be over the 5500# limit you speak of. My Yukon weighs more than that and I have car plates on that

On a side note my Cummins extended cab long box with a tool box full of straps, tools, jack, and a bunch of other crap with a 1/2 tank of fuel weighed 5900#. Take all of the crap out and get a regular cab and you would probably be under the weight.

**Edit**Ok a Silvy SS might be under the 5500# mark

I don't see people with diesels towing every day.
I don't see a lot of people getting 18+mpg either...most I talked to are 16-18. If you bought new and do the math on price of truck, plus fuel (costs about same as 91/93) Vs. the same truck in a gas model and run 87...it takes 8-10 to break even.(price+fuel)
Now since I don't tow every day or every weekend....I went gas...IF I did, then it would be a diesel as they pretty much run the same loaded or not.

I only plan on going up to the track maybe twice a month and it is an hour and a half away so I don"t really anything too crazy for hauling. This is why its a tough decision, because i could probably get by using the trailblazer if i wanted to.

I tow my car on a open trailef with a trailblazer 4.2L.....It has more than enough power so a TB SS would be fine towing.Use what you have already.I tow the car 3hrs. Oneway doing about 70-80 the hole way with no issues.

So it seems that a trailblazer ss would be very capable of towing my camaro with an open trailer. For all you guys towing with one are you guys all using trailer brakes? Any other advice if I went this route?
