Question Street tires for a drag race on the strip

Ok, we have a street car "hard tire" race at the track this weekend. No slicks or drag radials. Right now I'm running slicks and pulling times in the high 10's. Anybody have any idea if there is a street tire I can run that would get me close to my times now or anything I can do to a street tire that'll make it have enough grip for my power level on a prepped track?

We had a 99 z28 once on snow tires. Good burnout they got sticky like a drag radial. Broke the rear end on the street. Good hustle car for street races.

I remember somebody on here ran a local race like this with some type of tire. I can't remember what tire it was tho. Its on here somewhere. I remember him pulling a 1.6 60ft with them. I know it was on a 15 inch wheel, something like the 275/60r15 in size.

Define "street tire"?

Tread wear rating any factor?

Check out the R888, M/T Street Comp, G-Force Rival, A-032R.

I've never done it but don't guys wd-40 or soak the tire in gas? I'm sure googling around will help. I don't know if it works on certain rubber compounds etc, just some hearsay.

Tires can't be alterted or prepped in any way. If they are it is immediate DQ. Street tire can't be a Racing rated tire. It's not a DOT class where you can run specificlly made tires for the class.

275 is the widest tire you can run. No snow tires, no AWD cars allowed and it's 1/4 mile instead of 1/8th mile which is what they normally run at our track for races. I think my car can hold it after shifting to 2nd but I'm not sure. the first time I sprayed on a street tire was not a good experience and I just got the suspension working for the slick.

10.89 was the quickest pass last Sunday.

if they dont have a way to detect it you could try the supposed undetectable oval track tire softeners like "hot lap" beyond that think ballast in the rear....full tank , sub box full of lead lol etc...

I know they had to put alot of work into the car to get it to do that on those tires, so definately not the best tires but seems like they work ok.

That was the only thing i could find on the net. Seems like there is not alot of info on this stuff.

Went to test and tune last night and practiced on my street tire 245/50r16. Started off really careful and lowered my shot, softened the suspension, air pressure and backed way out where my shot comes in. By the 2nd run I was 11.30's on a 100 shot with it wanting to hold more. I still have another 50hp I can put in it and I can back up where my shot is coming in too. I'm getting a 10" tire today. A couple more inches of tread width I should be able to be close to low 11's / high 10's. I was about to try and my nozzle broke off when I was changing jets to up the shot. I ran the guy that made the finals last sunday and nosed him out so hopefully I can find the parts to fix my nozzle so I can run tomorrow.

This car just keeps surpising the hell out of me. I showed the video to some guys last night of that 280Z. You should have seen their jaws drop. lol

just throwing a thought out there that tire height can help as much as width longer contact patch with taller tire , wider contact patch with wider tire , at your power level you will likely need to maximize in both directions to hook it ,you can use your spray to make up for the gearing loss of a taller tire once its out and hooked up.

Thats pretty good, glad your making progress. What tires were you on and what tires are you getting? Also curious of what kind of 60fts you were able to get?

Yeah thats crazy that 280z can run that fast on those tires, i don't see how it did not spin once the power came in.

We ran a street tire class for 2 years at my local track. We only run 1/8 mile but my bolt on/100 shot car on 275/40/17 Riken Raptors went 7.3's@97mph. Tires work decent with about 18psi and getting them really hot.

My tires are a Cooper Zeons. they held pretty decent at 25 psi. I bought a set of the Futura 255/60r15's. Made one pass at 25psi on race day and took them off. Weren't near as good as the Cooper on my car. Made 6 runs testing and fine tuning everything. Even took my floor jack apart and put it in the trunk and had a full tank of gas and got my 60' down to 1.69s on the street tire. 7.1x in the 1/8th and 11.14 in the 1/4.

It was a fun race. We had a meeting yesterday with the track owner and started going through "new rules" for a few new street tire classes at the track. True "street"" cars. The idea sounds promising.

Check the Internet for PSCA Street Challenge class. It was based on using a off the rack 255/60/15 tire. Still was a high 8, low 9 sec. class.

Put the car in 2nd gear and turn the nitrous on as soon as possible the long gear will stop it from spinning.
