Default Lock up switch

I've had a lock up switch on my car for almost a year and every time I try it at the track I lose about 2 mph. I hit the switch in second gear, am I hitting it too early. I'm using a Vigilante 3200 converter, and I'm happy with my mph. However, I'll take more if I can get more.

Try it in 3rd, just about 5000 (95 mph or so), some guys go to 5500 if they have a real high shift point.

Caution: If you don't have enough gear to run high in your rpm band through the traps, then you'll probably loose mile an hour!

Example: My stroker go's through the traps at 6000+. If I lock up the converter I gain 1 tenth and 1 mile an hour. If I had taller gearing then I would kill shift extension by locking up the converter, to early (while it's still in the extension). Each combo is different, gear, hp, torque converter stall/extension and weight are some of the veritables.

I always got the best results manually locking my converter @ around 5000-5500 rpm or so in 3rd gear... I wouldn't manually lock the converter in 2nd. I would think that would almost bog the engine down when it made the 2-3 shift.

yup, I have had mine and I have used it a couple of times on the street. i lock it up in 3rd around 5,000 rpm's. I wonder how I will fair at the track with the 3.73's and the moser 12 bolt.

hey that's funny, cdm98z28...
my name is Christopher Daniel Minnich and i own a '98 z28. you copying me? anyways, to help you out...
i was going 12.8's at 104mph, but when i lock it up at 5200 about(on the stock tach) in 3rd gear, i gained 2 tenths. went down to 12.6 @ 106mph, same day, one run after the other. good luck and hope this helps. i think that when you shift into third, the engine is bogging down with the low rpms from the gear drop.

Chris

As said above, don't lock it until the top of 3rd. I've never locked mine at the track, except when I hit the switch by accident and made a full run locked, start to finish

No wonder my trans is slipping!!

Thanks for the replies. The car did seem to bog down slightly when it shifted 2-3. It just seems to me that locking up at 5000-5200 in third is so close to the end of the run, that gains would be minimal. I've heard of so many people getting .1-.2 sec and 1-2 mph, hopefully I'll be one of them once I try locking it later than I have been.
