Default 98 Formula Project.

Hey guys, so to start. Im planning on building an LQ9/L92 NA motor. I'm still attempting to figure out if I should stick with a 4L60 or go 80. Here are some pics to get it started.

Removed
AC
Air pump
Front sway
Carpet (don't know what to swap with yet, mines trashed)
Rear seats and brackets
All wiring for the monsoon behind the dash
Speakers (going with a Bluetooth speaker for tunes)

Looks promising so far. If you're gonna rev it or you don't have a built 4L60 yet I'd go 80E personally. I want to go 80E but no one wants my new Circle D 2E 4L60 converter lol

The 60 is shot. Won't shift to 4th. 2nd to 3rd flares bad. All gears are slipping. From the past I read 98 ecu cannot control the 80 even with efilive. Has there been any updates on that?

Manual valve body the 80 and call it a day. Better off that way anyway.

JL I was thinking that, with a new shifter to remove the center console.

Weighted it tonight, 3260 with a full tank. I have a lot of removing to do.

Shift it yourself... Better off imo. Cost, simplicity, etc. you get it.

Th400 honestly is a perfectly viable option unless you want to use the car to commute to work. And even if you do, if you have a 10-15 mile ride to work.... I'd do it. No overdrive was the way of the world for a long time.

Now if you want to drive it on 250 mile one way trips... I would opt for the overdrive. But if it's a track only car that will see 1000 miles a year on the street type of use, th400.

You mean the gear or two that that helps it weigh 115lbs less than a 4L80 and is MUCH cheaper to build and buy parts for which helps pay for other parts for the car then yea they are missing a gear or two. NA cars need to be as light as possible. That comment would work the same if a c7z owner says the 4L80 isn't a street car transmission because it's missing a few gears.

TH400 is definitely a viable option, a few qs. The car will be a street strip. Closest strip is 60 mi away with the highway being 80mph. Would the 3sp and a 3.42s or even my current 2.73s be fine driving on that?

Can my current driveshaft be modified to fit the 400?

Weighing less us definitely a giant plus for me.

I have rode in a th400 with 3.55s on a 28in tire and it drove fine and it was over an hr drive to work and hr back.

I am going the th400 route after seeing how expensive and heavy the 4L80 swap and parts are. So now I got a 4L80 that's no use to me in the garage. My setup with be 3:42s, 28in tall tire, with th400.

Yes the current driveshaft can be as that's what I will be doing to a spare ds I have sitting around

I'll be with the 10 bolt rear for a while, 2.73s, for the price, how much would the TH400, converter and swap parts run? What stall are you running?

Depends on if your buying new, built, using stock parts or aftermarket.

I'll be running an FTI

Th400 prices. Art a lot with what's in them as there's a ton of options. If you're going to use Fti for the converter he can do a transmission as well, so many places to get a tranny it's impossible to say who's best etc.

So after a long discussion with myself, 4L80 manually shifting, I have the trans already. The new problem is to go with HD2 and a black box or HD3, not alot staying HD3 from the posts I've read. With HD2, I can later on add the compushift?

Rossler does very good work but I would not say they're the only one. Coan, Hughes, Hutch, as well as plenty of others I have no experience with all do good work

I know and it is obviously an opinion, but here is how I look at it. I can buy a trans from Rossler and never even have to consider the possibility that it won't do exactly what he tells me it will do. If it fits in the budget, you just can't go wrong with him.

Carl absolutely has a great program no questioning that, I would not hesitate to use his piece in any build I have any part of. I would just make the phone call to a few others as well, for different perspectives, and it doesn't hurt to do a little competitive shopping, which may or may not result in any worth while results.
