Default Shorai Lithium battery review

Had it about a month in my mostly street car. Seems great so far. The car sat for 8 days with no charger 3 different times and started up great.
Went to the strip a couple wks ago and the tech guy said "where's your battery?!" No **** lol. Shaved exactly 25lbs. I got some nice conversions to bolt up to stock bolts. Made my own hold down bracket. Sweet

I thought so too except for the pads I had to put under the battery to raise it a little. Also I had to hacksaw about a 1/4" of those conversions to fit. Not bad though, its only plastic.

Battery itself was $250. Charger $67. Conversions $26. Gotta pay to play

I guess I dont follow. It's listed as a powersports battery. So they know its gonna be charged by a vehicle (of some sort) charging system. Why would you ever need a charger?

My car sits all winter and the battery comes out. The car can sit for a couple wks at a time in summer too. I wanted to make sure and have the right charger/tender for the battery for those times. According to shorai the charger is specifically designed to charge, store, maintain, balance, and diagnose the battery. I don't think we all have lithium figured out totally yet. I thought it would be a good idea to use the dedicated equipment.

Here's some info....

According to them... "Shorai Batteries require a charging system output of 13.1 Volts or higher at idle, and must not exceed 15.2 volts at maximum output."

When I start my car the gauge says high 13v and maybe low 14v...I cant remember. After driving a while iv seen it dip 13.0v-13.1v so I hope that's not going to be a issue. I can say I'm surprised how well its doing. After 8 days of sitting, the car fires right up without a hiccup. My car probably doesn't have much power draw while sitting. So far so good at least.

Thats an accetable range for the average alternator as long as its voltage regulator is functioning properly.

I believe the lithium batteries need a specific charger. I could be wrong but when I was looking into them each company said to only use their charger to charge. Could be for them to just make more money but when you're spending the money might as well just get the kit. There's no problems with the car charging them though. Just the same as any other battery that way. I know some lithium batteries can last up to 90 minutes (maybe more) with no alternator too so some guys just choose not to run an alternator with them when they race or switch the alternator off when they're racing and then you'd need the charger. My buddy just doesn't run an alternator at all in his street car with a lithium battery. Never drives it that long so just brings it home and charges it when he's done. But his lasts 80-90 minutes or at least that's what it said it would last. Haven't tested it fully yet lol

If it ends up being an issue at all, which it probably won't, you can get an alternator with an adjustable regulator and increase the voltage a touch, maybe a half volt or so. Powermaster has them

Well that's cool. I didn't know they made adjustable regulators. I actually have a powermaster 150a right now but not adjustable (that I know of) They make a nice unit. Thanks for the info.

They are nice when you need different voltage. The Powermaster part number is 578618 for black and 478618 for regular if you want to look them up. But I'm sure it will be fine.

Can you play your radio for a song or two or can you leave the door open with the interior lights on for a min or two without it affecting startup power? I'm interested in this battery also..

I cant really answer that. I'm extra careful about running anything now without the car running. Iv had the door open with headlights on for a couple min that's about it. Started the same.

I am still on the fence about these lithium batteries. I have been using them in RC cars for many years now and the ones made for full size cars are not much different. What I don't get still, is how they charge. In the RC car world, the charger setting are completely different from a lithium to a lead acid. If you try to charge a lithium on the lead acid setting, it will explode the battery. I will try to find out the differences in how they charge and post them up. The way I see it, a standard alternator is just not meant to charge a lithium. The other thing I don't like is if you go below something like 10.8 volts, it ruins the battery. Lithium is not forgiving at all! I do love the compact size and light weight...

I was asking because I had a Braille light weight before and it was real unreliable. One day I left my cables at home and it left me stranded in Walmart parking lot.. That's when I said screw it and bought a 26R-5S from out that same Walmart I was stranded in and never looked back.. The battery been in the car since 2013 problem free.. I would not want to be at a street race and the cops show up and you get busted because you couldn't get away from a dead battery lol..
