Default Best method for trimming the cowl?

If I'm in the wrong section, I apologize but I figured this is where I would get my answer. I have recently decided to take the plunge and go with a vic jr., accufab 4150 set up. I am about to start to clearance the cowl. I would like to do minimal cutting and retain my wipers. I have seen it done where you have to just cut off 1 pass side wiper bolt. I would also like to be able to run some sort if filter or carb hat and cone on the street. I plan to buy a vfn 4" sloped WS6 so hood clearance won't be an issue. My question is what is the best tools and methods used to cut the cowl? I heard if you're not careful you can break the windshield and that has me spooked now.

X2. I used blankets cover up everything. Remove the cowl plastic and you will see what you need to cut. You can crack the windshield if you knick it. But if you careful it's not a big deal. I used a saws all and did well. And finish cut with cutoff wheel. But I practical removed my whole cowl.

Thanks guys. I'm thinking about starting off with the sawzall and finishing it up with a cut off tool.

A super vic is gross overkill for my set up.

I did the same as mentioned. Started with a sawzall and then a cut off wheel. I used an el marko marker to mark where I will be cutting which helped with sawzall. It's lot easier if the engine bay is empty, but you can always cover the engine with a thick movers blanket.GL

Also I pretty sure the super Vic out preforms the Jr in everyway even in mild combos.

Cover the engine with at least 3 layers of sheet/blanket you'll be shocked at how metal chips seem to find their way everywhere.

Do not touch windshield or you're buying a new one.

You can cut it and keep the wipers, won't be the prettiest but the cowl plastic will cover a lot of it up.

Super victor is a lot better I take I agree with the statement to go with one.

Wilson throttle body about the best one power wise I have seen fwiw.

I would just use a cutoff wheel, and if you have a friend have them hold a running shop vac near it to help contain the mess.

Thanks for the help guys. 1 more question, does the TB need to be mounted backwards, meaning the cable will be on the pass. side, if I'm only notching and not removing the cowl?

Also I have already purchased the jr. so no going back. Plus I need the extra clearance for a nitrous plate.

Well I'm able to mount the throttle cable on the drivers side and still retain the wipers. I have one more notch to cut for the throttle cable linakge and I have to make a cleaner straight cut across the back. I used a combo of a sawzall, cut off wheel and a body saw. I wish there was enough room to use the sawzall everywhere. There has been a lot of sweat and blood that has gone in to it, I hope it was worth it.

If you're running a 4500 rotate it 90 degrees so the cable is across the front and then it can easily make a 90 degree turn, that's the easiest way to deal with it, and you can run a stock style cable this way.

If you're stuck running a 4150 then you may want to run it on the passengers side and make a 180 degree loop around to the firewall, all depends what and how much trimming you did.

Did you put a set of poly or solid motor mounts in the car? If you did then the amount of clearance needed will be less and that will help your cause, a custom set of solid ones would allow you to drop the motor a little and get a lot more clearance. Just a thought.

I have a 4150. I cut a pretty large square all the way back to the firewall. I shouldn't have an issue with the cable on the driver's side. I have stock motor mounts at the moment. I also was able to retain wipers.

I doubt youre going to be able to clear a filter and retain wipers. I used a grinder and cut off wheel with blankets covering everything. I run no filter, nitrous outlet stinger plate and deleted the wipers.

Make sure youre prepared to do this there isnt any going back I had to cut a lot more than I anticipated. I wouldve bought another fast and direct port if i knew the change was so involved. You cant beat the look though

Oh I'm already past the point of no return. I think I can clear the wipers with some sort of filter. Whether that's a modified small circle filter or a carb hat with a cone still needs to be figured out. I saw someone on this site was able to use a circle filter and a super vic while retaining wipers.

The problem is a fast intake and nitrous is 1 back fire and you're spending another $800+. I also believe the vic jr offers a much more consistent flow to each cylinder which will keep a stock bottom end alive longer.

I'm hopefully finishing up trimming the cowl today and will post up some pics.

For Nhra you need 2 return springs on the TB... Not sure what you're using for a nitrous system but if your car is like most a spacer under tb usually picks up some power as well.

The car will never pass an NHRA tech the way it sits so a spring isn't going to make much of a difference.

I haven't decided between a plate of puck but it has a 1" spacer on it. Either I'll keep it with the puck or the plate will replace it.

I will have to take pics tomorrow but I just made my entire cowl removeable and now bolts in so it can come off when needed and go back in after engine work and my wipers still function.

All buttoned up. Took the car for a quick cruise around the block last weekend. Goes in for a tune next Wednesday.
