Th400 and never look back. 10s were fun with the 6 speed but mid 9s and soon to be 8s I don't miss the 6 speed one bit.

This is where I'm sitting right now. I'm running mid 10s at 140 mph and I am starting to get whining in 1st through 3rd in my transmission. I love driving the stick but I could be in the 9s right now plus I wouldn't have to worry about tearing **** up as much. Th400 might be my next big mod I do.

Th400, and if you find the OD is absolutely needed put a gear vendor's on it. That will suck up a bunch of power but it will give you an overdrive.

I would highly suggest making this move before spending 4 grand on another transmission that has a clutch that will constantly be a problem, etc.

With a 28 going 65 with 4.10 gears was about 3000 with a loose n/a converter, with the 3.73 gear and same tire, tighter converter it was about 2500.

Can't do this. I cruise at 80 and often do 85 on the freeway.

For mid 10's I'd do a 28 of some kind, a 2 step, and if you don't have them already, I'd investigate double adjustable shocks. All that would give you more to work with.

Th400 with a gear vendors overdrive which you can specify how much overdrive that is, or a 4L80 would be your best bet trans wise, if you have to have OD.

I'm not telling you what to do with the car or your $ but if you stay the stick route be prepared to be in a circle of endless breaking and fixing and breaking and fixing, it will never stop with a factory T56 tranny and drag racing.

If you must keep a stick shift in the car I would highly suggest looking into a real drag racing transmission... you can drive it but it's gonna eat clutches like candy since you will be using a softloc style weighted clutch for tuning reasons.

The 4l80 really sounds like it would be your best option... fwiw.

^ this guy speaks the truth. I have years and years of t56 frustration to prove it. I was so fed up of pulling my trans every weekend I parked my car for 3 years and didn't blink twice at it.

I'll put my 2 cents in. 550 hp n/a and 650 with a 100 shot 3300# car stock t56 best of 10.33 on motor and 9.96 on a 100 shot. single adjustable shocks up front and doubles on the back. On good track prep days 1.39 60 on bad days 1.45
I ran 28x10.5 stiff walls with the 3.90 gear
My car liked slipping the clutch slightly also may have helped save the trans.
Went to a power glide recently. Miss my 6spd

Again, FWIW- I grenaded my t56, found a guy willing to give me a complete ready to swap in th400 for the broken trans and new clutch.

By far the best decision I have made with my car. If it wasn't a turbo car and needed more gear I would have opted for an OD trans, but it's very drive-able with the 3.55s IMO

I am going to go T56 Magnum. My reasoning is I love my 6 speed and the car is not a dedicated drag car. I am not sure I would like the auto the 80% of the time it will spend on the street.

Anyone has experience with these? they are supposed to be unbreakable.

I'm here with you. I love driving the 6 speed but I would be way faster with the auto and have less headaches.

I appreciate all the wisdom. I think some guys are giving advise based on their personal taste for a full on drag car. If I was going that route, we would be cutting weight, Auto 400, trying to hit single digits.

I want to drive the car with air and be able to travel long distances with it if I want to. It's super clean, not looking to make the full conversion. Not yet anyway.

I understand am in the same boat. My goal with the car is 9.99 and still be able to drive it around town and short trips.

Ha I g had fast street car and race car I stand by the 4l80 being a good fit for you. A manual valve body setup would make it fun to drive, and you would have your overdrive to go on all the trips ya can stand

Yep, I have the 2 step and adjustable all the way around.

The tire choice has me undecided still. Everyone makes a good argument for their suggestions.

I am laughing because I can see myself a few years down the road with this thing as full drag car. I will say to myself, Darn it, JL ws-6 told me so!
