Default 10.78@128.27 (1.56 60') -- cam only (TReX)/6-speed at N vs S Shootout

I was lucky enough to make the trip up to Indiana to attend the North vs. South shootout this weekend. My parents and I flew to Indianapolis on Friday, while Paul@Thunder and Steve drove the Thunder trailer with the cars on Thursday.

The plan was to make some Test and Tune passes on Friday night, but the weather didn't look like it would cooperate. The weather did clear a little later in the evening, but it was too late to make it back to the track.

Saturday brought some excellent weather for this time of year. We couldn't have asked for a better day to race. Temps were in the middle 60s with low-humidity and good barometric pressure.

I didn't think the car would have been very competitive in the Factory Stock class, so I decided to enter the brackets. In hind sight, I should have just entered that class as I think the car would have done well based on the times in that class. Oh well...

I was having some traction problems later on in the event as I am still dialing in the new suspension. Part of the problem was the track was not allowing you to do a burnout in front of the water box. If you tried to pull forward, they would stop you and make you creep back nearly in the box. This made it hard to get the tires hot and it was tracking some water up to the starting line.

In the test and tune/qualifying passes, I ran 10.85, 10.88, and a 10.91, still spinning and the 60' in the high 1.5/low 1.6 range. MPH ranged in high 126-mid 127 range on those passes.

The best pass of the day was in the 3rd round of brackets. I dialed in a 10.85, but the car hooked better than I thought. This resulted in:

60' .... 1.561
330' .... 4.490
1/8 .... 6.927
mph .... 100.72
1000' .... 9.029
1/4 .... 10.783
mph .... 128.27

Needless to say, I didn't care if I broke out on that pass. lol The car had 10.70 in it easy with a little more traction.

The best pass of the day would have been the first pass off the trailer. The car left real hard (1.51 60'), but the tranny popped out of 3rd gear right before the 1/8 mile as I went to shift to 4th. Even popping out of gear, the car went a 6.865@77mph in the 1/8. I think that would have been a high 10.6x pass if not for the tranny issue.

Raceweight was 3253 and the DA was 1300' according to a few handheld weather stations.

Thanks to everyone organizing the event, especially Tom Kempf (FSTR-THANU) and all the volunteers. Despite the track issues, I think everyone had a pretty good time considering.

I should have a ton of pics and videos uploaded very soon.

Nice job Jason. I'm sure you'll be ready for the November S/O - even a little T/T. 10.6 are a lock for you.

Thanks guys! Raceweight was 3253. There is still some weight left I wish to take out, but that will be later this summer.

If was nice putting some names with some faces this weekend. Sean, you have your car running very well!

Damn Jason, BIIIIIIIIIIIG congrats, seems all the hard work paid off!!!!! I hopefully will pick up a new f-body tomorrow. 02 hardtop SS waiting to be molested, LOL!!!!! Oh and it seems someone needs to change their sig as their car is no longer the fastest cam only 6-speed, just think if you put a nasty Turbo 400 in the red beast.

Mike

Very impressive man I wonder how your times compare to "THE BADDEST N/A, CAM ONLY LS1 in the WORLD"(self proclaimed by 01-Z)? Same day, same track.

Jason

Are you sure those are stock heads? Seriously, youre runnin faster than most h/c cars without mineshaft air. F**k, even your raceweight is typical. 128 mph thats serious hp.

What throws me off is I saw dyno comparison from Dan something between the tr230 and the trex. He only gained 15 rwhp. What was your best mph with the tr230 cam? It should be around 125mph if the trex only adds 15hp, right?

Seriously, what are the drawbacks of the trex cam? Cruise rpms must be about 2k? Big deal, with a m6 YOU dictate engine rpm. I thought my mms 229 cam (230 578 114) was streetable without tuning. It aint. I just realized how much time it spends in neutral coasting. It cruises fine but it dont like decels in gear. It will buck like mad if you let off the gas in gear at 1k-2k rpms. Its not a big deal. You just go with the flow and remember the sweet spots of rpms and throttle position. If its gonna buck either coast in neutral or drop a gear. Is that how the Trex drives? Is that as bad as it gets? Cuz thats not a big deal.

Im thinkin bout tryin this cam with some edelbrock stepped 1 7/8" headers. That would be some cheap hp with little work.
