Default How much does heat hurt track times?

We ran our cars a few months ago in about 55 Degree weather and hooked fairly decent (1.62 60' and 12.04 @110mph for me). Since then I've lost about 75lbs, got better shocks(Strange over QA1), added a S3 throttle body, pulled the front swaybar. We ran this past weekend in 90+ weather and my average pass was 1.67 60' and 12.10 @112. Does the heat kill times that much? Does this sound right? I was hoping for my first 11 second pass, but no dice. G5X3 coming soon.

Weather is everything when it comes to quick et's(along with traction). From my experience, you can loose 3-4 tenths from 55-95 degrees in an 11.50-12.50 car. Especially if the humidity is very high also. A hot track is harder to hook also. My favorite weather is 45-52 degrees with a high baro and direct sunlight. Thats when you will see your best times usually. Cool, dense air for power and enough heat on the track to hook hard.

So it IS harder to hook on a hot track. I was wondering why I was hooking harder in cooler weather. Weird. I know the car has 11s in it as it sits. Ah well, Bogarts and a set of M&H tires should help put me over the top no matter what. Watch, 12.001 HA! I'd be pissed.

Just to show you how dramatic it is-check this out:
Last season I was at the local track and the weather was in the 80's. I made two time trial passes about a half hour apart. Run 1-12.67-86 degrees.
Run 2-12.61-80 degrees.
Round 1-Dialed a 12.58, ran a 12.60-78 degrees
Round 2-Dialed a 12.55, ran a 12.57-74 degrees
Round 3-(really cooled off now) Dialed a 12.49, ran a 12.45 and broke out-67 degrees.
It kept getting chillier, and I didn't know honestly how much the car would pick up, so I didn't know what to dial. I broke out. Yeah, temp. can affect big time.

Lightbulb

Generally speaking, roughly 1 tenth and 1 MPH per 10 degrees. Add humidity, a headwind, and a crappy barometer and it can leave you scratching your head.

I ran 13.49 at 101.5 MPH in my C5 (bone stock) the other day. 99 degrees + 29.95 barometer + high humidity = SHITTY! I would be willing to bet you that the car would be in the 12s with some dry 50 degree air/30.1 baro conditions.

That's nuts! I never knew it made THAT much of a difference. Well, I guess I'll have to wait for my 11 second pass.
