Default Drag Racing The 10-Bolt

A lot of you post on here that you have broken your ten bolts. What exactly broke?

Has anyone...

1. Broken an axle?

2. Broken the splines on an axle?

3. Broken a ring or pinion gear? (If so, what brand and gear ratio)

4. Broken a mini spool?

5. Bent an axle tube?

When I purchased my Firebird new in 1995 the first thing that I changed was the rear. Since then I have only worked on two ten bolts in my shop. The first had a blown posi. The second had a loud ring gear that had been set up incorrectly at another shop. So, as you can tell, I have very little experience with these rears, but am curious.

Thanks in advance,

Daren

back in my 10 bolt days:

took most of the teeth off of Motive 3.73 ring gear.

then destroyed spider gear in auburn posi(my Z28 somehow had an auburn in it)

managed this all on a nittos with only 2.0 sixty foots, but was spraying..I think i spun so hard that when it hooked finally it did it.

most of the damage to a 7.5/7.625 10bolt is the result of case deflection. if you get a good cover with teh cap supports and run a solid pinion spacer instead of the stock style crush sleeve you can increase gear adn posi life by a ton.

Sheered some teeth from both the ring and pinion of a set of Richmond 3.73s.

Firstly, thanks for the replies, please keep them coming.

Have any of you ever broken any factory gear sets? Especially the 3.42, 3.73, and 4.10.

Thanks,

Daren

I ran a 12.2 with bolt on's and slicks launching soft tried to get a 12.0 out of it and snapped the axel right after the launch.I moved a inch and was stuck to the track when they pushed me off.You could here the sticky tires on the pavement when it moved. The only way the 10 bolt will last is to have a auto.-- or change everything inside it.Then there's still a chance it will break.Start saving for a rear. The stick cars are a lot harder on rears. My axel snapped with under 1,500 miles on car.

Nine Finger,

Who's gear set do you have?

02SOMWS6,

Snapped? Did the splines go or the axle itself? How about the housing, did you have it checked for straightness or just toss it?

I have 12-bolts in both of my cars, I'm just trying to do a little research on the 10-bolts.

Thanks,

Daren

The axel snapped in half. The rear would have been fine but the axel wobbled when it snapped and chipped were it slides into the diff. I figured it would vibrate so I invested in a 12 bolt rather than do a 10 bolt build up.The gears were 4.11 with GM part #'s sold under a diff brand. The gears are still good and my buddy used the other axel over in his car that was bent.I was pulling 1.62 60ft's when it snapped in half.My thoughts are the stock parts in the rear aint worth ****.If you wanna go fast you have to build it up and change everything in it or get a 9" or a 12 bolt. I have both in my 2 cars

The housing is fine, I might use it over one day, maybe put a spool in it with better axels.Takes less power to turn a 10 bolt over a 12 bolt so it might happen,it's sitting in the parts trailer now

Man ,I thought for sure I would be in the 9's with spray once I get into the 10's all engine. Seeing that you ran a 10.0 with a 200 shot makes me want to rethink that. What NOS kit do you have?By the end of this season I will be in the 10's all engine. But I was only planning on spraying 150 at most.A 200 shot will put me at 650-700 HP at the crank- how much can the stock bottom end take before you throw a rod?

stock 10 bolt, 3.23 gears, using stud kit, preload housing, synthetic fluid....run 10.9 at 128 with about 4000lbs race weight (auto, 3400 stall)

All of the above. With the money I spent trying to repair my 10 bolt, i could have bought 3 12 bolts by now
