Default Wolfe roll cage experts in here, please!

Here's my situation. I'm gonna need a roll cage. Last time I ran at HRP, I ran one 11.87 and they gave me a stern warning. Next pass, I clicked off an 11.69 (which, at the time, was the new 6-speed N/A bolt-on record), and they gave me the boot. Wouldn't even give me my timeslip. How gay. I had to get it from my opponent, who was gracious enough to let me have it. So basically what I need to know is what is the cheapest way (including price of the cage, AND price of install) to get by tech at HRP and/or the Motorplex in Ennis, and still maintain some respectable level of safety?

* Chromoly/mild steel?
* Weld-in/bolt-in?
* 4-pt./6-pt./10-pt.?

My priorities are as follows:

1) Price
2) Safety
3) Weight

Thanks!!!!!!!!!

price? install? bolt-in 6-pt (or 5 if you can) w/ some padding to cover the bolts. cheap = mild steel. and light = moly....its up to you.

Hey, man...forgive the ignorant question, but is the 5-pt. legal and how did you get it? I was glancing at Tom Byrne's website, and he only sells 4-pt., 6-pt., and 10-pt. That install looks clean!

yes you can call up Wolf and tell them you only want a 5 point .. I belive a 5 point is good till 10.0 . there is no need for the passenger side bar .

5 pt is legal. The bar that is left off is the passenger-side bar.

There are trade offs when you have to consider weight, safety, and price.

The lightest bars are welded-in chrome-moly units. They are also the most expensive.

The safests bars are generally welded (either mild steel or chrom-moly). However, they are more expensive than the bolt-in variety, and often are not the lightest.

The cheapest bars are the bolt-in mild steel bars. However, they are probably the least safe and the heaviest.

See the problem?

If I were in your shoes (and in many ways, I am), I would get a professionally-done custom chrome-moly bar with swing-out bar. This is probably the most expensive route, but it will be safe, useful, and potentially the lightest option (you guys like light, right?).

If you want to really nuts, and really want to save weight, and don't care what it looks like, you can actually have a small 5 pt bar made that essentially just loops around the drivers seat (and has the mandatory sidebar, of course). It won't be cheap, but would probably cut the weight penalty nearly in half. I've seen NHRA Stock Eliminator cars do this - mainly to save weight. Looks silly...but hey, whatever works.

Or you could just stick to IHRA tracks and go 11.50 without worrying about it.

Yes we can do 5-points in addition to our 6-points and 4-points.

As far as wieight. The 4130 Cromoly will be about 20lbs lighter than the Mild Steel, but will cost more intially and for install.

If you know someone that can weld. The least expensive way is a mild steel weld-in roll bar.

The kit Mild steel 6-point is $289.00, and an extra $100.00 if you want it jig notched. Our 4130 cromoly 6-point is $415.00 and $100.00 to jig notch it.

5-point mild steel is $244.00 for the kit, and $80.00 for jig notching. 4130 cromoly 5-point is $360.00 for the kit and $80.00 for jig notching.

The swing out door bars are $85.00 per door.

Since your in Waco, we can also install. We install our 6-point Mild-steel for $700.00.

Hope that helps

Dan

Hi Dan...if I can intrude on my F-body brothers question for just a sec...do ya'll have a website with prices and such for Mustangs? I'm going to have to get a bar soon myself, and will likely go with a 5 pt cromoly kit.

Info greatly appreciated.

Dan

Dan, does that $700 refer to the WELD-IN 6-pt. mild steel or the BOLT-IN one? And is that including the price of the cage, or is that JUST for install? Either way, what would the price be if my interior (carpet, panels, etc.) was already removed (we all know I'm an expert at that, of course)? Thanks!

FYI, Brian told me that in 2003, NHRA rules are changing to make 5-pt. cages illegal! Which means you'd have to find another door bar and weld it in if you already have a 5-pt.

[Edit: ATTN: BOB COSBY - dude, check out the above to see the rumor I heard from Brian at Madman about future NHRA rule changes]

Hmmm...haven't heard that. I'll certainly do some checking with my contacts.

In the meantime....VMP up here is IHRA, so I don't have to worry about bars and such till next years NMRA season. The air is looking to be about at sea level this Friday night, I've got the slicks mounted, and my car weight (as driven daily) is down to around 3240 lbs...might have to make the trip.

Cage is TOO MUCH WEIGHT!

I'll probably get one in the spring.lightest and strongest.

The $700.00 is the cost or our 6-point weld-in roll bar installed and includes the roll bar as well.

We don't charge extra to remove the interior unless there is a stereo system or something different in the back. Or we are having to remove the dash in a Roll Cage situation.

Will do! I always trailer to the track, so look for a ragged old Dodge van pulling a cheap trailer with a black Cobra aboard.

Hey, Sean. Don't you want to run at HRP? I entertained the idea (for a short time) of just running a bunch of 1/8-mile passes until I had the feel of it down perfectly, then running the full 1/4 and getting 1 timeslip before they boot you. But, I finally decided, hey, it's not that expensive, and the added weight can be easily compensated for, and it's safe, so, you know. I'm about to call Brian @ Madman and see what he can do for me. Later.
