Default 5-point harness mounting?

I'm redoing some interior stuff in my car right now, and I'm probably going to replace my harness while I'm at it (are they good for 2 years or 3?). After looking at some of the rules regarding mounting the belts to the floor, I have determined that my setup using the factory seat belt holes isn't quite legal. I believe the rules state that the belts must be anchored directly to the frame or chassis of the car, not the sheetmetal body/floorpan.

So, what's the right/safest way to mount the harness in a 4th generation F-body. I'm going to continue to mount the shoulder harnesses to the rollbar, but I'm unsure of the lap belt mounting at this point...

the belts are good for 2 years, if i were you just have a bung welded to your roll bar!

2 years, huh? I guess I will be buying some new belts pronto, then

I don't get what you're suggesting about welding a bung to the rollbar. The lapbelt portion of the harness isn't really even near the rollbar. The lap belt is supposed to be mounted within 2" of the center of your body (or something like that).

George,

You might check with the company that manufactured your harness. You can typically send it back to get it re-certified for another two years.

Thanks Trevor... It's an RJS harness, and a pretty bottom of the line one at that... I've been wanting to put a different one in anyway. Now I have a really good excuse to do it!

George

I've got mine mounted where the stock belts bolt in. Since I've eliminated my factory 3 point shoulder/lap belt they were open. Used the same shoulder bolts, but did have to open the holes a bit in the 5 point bracket thingy's

Never really thought about that not being legal. Things seem to be a bit different when it comes to a non-full frame vehicle. At least w/ the cage, so i'd image the belt mounting might be similar. Re-enforced floor mounting should be ok.

FWIW, I've got my shoulder belts just wrapped around the shoulder bar on the cage, and the crotch belt goes to a bar mounted between the front seat mounting bolts.

Anybody know for sure??

The lap belts are legal to be mounted to the hactory holes in the floor. The sholuder harness has to be secured to the cross bar on the cage. I usually weld a tab on the cage. The belts have to be mounted so that the shoulder straps cant slip off the driver shoulders. The crotch belt should be mounted under your seat so the driver cannot slide forward.

OK Brian, that clears a lot up... I've been using the stock holes in the floor for 3 years now, but wasn't 100% sure of the legality. I do have a tab welded on the crossbar for the shoulder straps. All I need to do then, is get some new belts and reinstall the crotch strap to be back up to spec.

Thanks guys! I didn't want to put the belts back in the stock location on the floor if it wasn't legal.

most people won't have their's redone since it costs about the same as getting a new set. Gives you the option to change colors for the next 2 years, like puke green if Jeg's is out of red. Who knows George, might look cool

Either way: get some new belts!!

For the lap belts and ***** belt, I got some high grade 1/2" bolts that are 1.5" long and welded them to the floor (head down). I then used a nylon lock nut to secure the belts on the bolts. This way I can still use my factory belt for daily driving.
