will spacers destroy lugs on a hard launch?
just wondering. i was debating with a friend of mine. i have heard they will cut and destroy all 5 lugs on a hard launch if you run spacer with 15" draglights/prostars. is this true? he is one of those guys that wont grind like the rest of us!
also isnt it a 5/16" spacer?

I still have to run a thin spacer on the rear of my car, even with my Wilwood rear brakes. The spacers have yet to be a problem, even with my car cutting low 1.3 60' times.
YMMV...

Re: will spacers destroy lugs on a hard launch?
I've been having a problem with bent, broken, and crossthreaded lug studs (when using my pro-stars and spacers). I've replaced the rears probably 5 times this year. It was worrying me for a while but I figured it out...
The Pro-Star wheel uses a deep shank style lugnut. Therefore, if you do not get the spacer PERFECTLY centered around the studs when you put on the wheel the lugnut will hit the spacer. Therefore it will be improperly torqued, will crossthread, and 'cause all sorts of ugly problems (like the wheel won't want to come off).
Not like i'd know about this.

I run spacers all the way around (5/16") when I have the draglites on the car. I make sure to center them by hand before snugging down the lugs. Never had any issues for the past 2 years using the draglites.

the thicker the wheel spacer, the more leverage it puts on the stud twisting it back and forth.you want more load on the face on the axle resulting in less twist of the stud. wheel spacers arent realy even suppose to pass tech. with a small spacer you should be fine but ide recommend arp studs no matter what. earlier this year i saw a car leave the line break all the studs on one side due to the studs twisting from the wheel spacer, turn sideways, hit the tree and by the time it was done the car was on its side with the tree laying underneath it. all in less then 60 ft.theres my .02 cents. take what you want.

PSJ,
I agree with you but Thunder and Madman both said they would not grind anymore on my brakes or they believe that they would become unsafe.
I do not want to run the 5/16 spacers but I have to with my prostars. I like the look of the Prostars and I do not want to spend the money that it would cost to buy new wheels or brakes. I would rather spend it on more HP!
Anyway I will get off my soap box now!

Re: will spacers destroy lugs on a hard launch?
To avoid the mis-aligned spacer problem that bigSS had I just put a few dabs of permatex or similar on the spacers, then press them on the rotor for a minute or two making sure they're perfectly centered. When the permatex sets-up it holds the spacers in place which makes putting the Draglites on & off much easier.

Re: will spacers destroy lugs on a hard launch?
Coach, totally true, the center section gets really thin, GeorgeC broke one a while back while grinding... I have kept an eye on mine and so far so good but if I broke one I would get aftermarket rear brakes or different wheels.

Snapped 5 lugnuts on a launch using rear spacers on prostars....ground the calipers down the next day and never had a problem with them since.

Re: will spacers destroy lugs on a hard launch?
I suggest getting some quality McGuard lug nuts for the Welds.
From my experience... the standard Weld lug nuts are very cheaply made an will eat up your lugs after a few changes.

The Summit ones suck too.

Re: will spacers destroy lugs on a hard launch?
Alittle off topic but, is it possible to run the fronts without spacers? I have a set of Telstars that I running 5/16 spacers with and I had to grind the front calipers to get them to fit. I just don't like how they bulge out of the wheel wells.

Re: will spacers destroy lugs on a hard launch?
I have spacers on the front only. I center mine by spraying a little 3M adhesive on there to mate both surfaces. They never move
