Default MTI heads/Cam guys inside.. Please convince me!

(Also posted in Internal Engine Section)

Im about to order MTI's Head and cam package but before I blow 5700 dollars on the package I want to make sure im not making a bad mistake.

My car: 02 SS with all the bolt ons and a vig 3200.

1st Q: Is the C2 or X1 to much cam for a daily driven car(200 miles a week) including 55 miles driven to track on Fridays. I dont drive my car far distances.

2nd Q: Were you completely satisfied with this package? What were your before and after times with this package??

Last Q: I run 12.50's consistently, with their Stage II Heads and C2 or X1 Cam, is it possible for me to hit 11.50's, or is it too much to ask?

I will be going with the X1 in my daily driver, and I'm using stock heads. LOnSLO has the F1, basically the same cam, on stock heads and he hit 11.99 with a 1.85 60' and a 3500 raceweight. Hope that helps a bit.

go for it!

I first called mti and ordered stage 2 heads and a c2 cam, then a month later called and changed it to a 382 all bore with the same heads and a x1 cam, then called a month or more later and changed to a 422 with S1 cam and stage 3 heads

Terry has more money to blow than I do. $5700.00 is a lot of money for a H/C package. Get a set of Absolute Speed Heads and a Cam of your choice w/ gashets and head bolts for under $2000.00 and pay some one for the install and tuning. You should spend less that $3500.00. JFM put these heads on his car with a TR224 cam and ran 11.04. Spend some money on suspension, and light weight wheels and tires. You will see big gains... What is your setup by the way???

Gosh Terry thats alot of different changes!
But I know when their done with your car youll enjoy it

ClassicCollector: Thanks for the useful information I think im pretty sure of getting this cam. But now Im having second thoughts of getting just the X1 Cam and either using the rest of the money for other stuff like a TNT kit etc. or just buying some cheaper heads like 2001 Pewter WS6 mentioned.

Pewter WS6: I have a 02 SS with the following boltons:

Macs w/orp
3" cutout<---Never capped
Flowmaster
MSDWires/NGK's
Ported TB
Vig 3200
Hughes Performance Pan
Moser 12 Bolt w/ 373's<---LOUUUUDDD!!!!
HPP3
160 Stat
and other goodies cant remember
Best e.t. 12.50 @ 112

SNAXS... The mods you listed is a great start. I ran a 12.02 @ 111 with the stock motor. I ran ET Streets and skinnies on Weld wheels. I had all the bolt ons. ASP Pulley, Hal Shocks, Pace 85mm MAF, Ported Throttle Body, Vig3200, SLP headers with Cats and through a Corsa Exhaust. No cutout. And I had Ed Wright tuning. Last year I dropped in a mild cam and ran 11.70 @ 115 with a DA of about 1200'. Fir this upcoming season, I bought a set of Absolute Speed Heads and a TR224 cam. I am upping the converter to a TCI4400 and will be shooting for 10's. I bought the heads on a GP for $1350.00 and the flow numbers are unreal. I bought the cam used from Thunder Racing for $325.00. So for a grand total of $1675.00 I think I have an awsome H/C package. Add $450.00 for Ed wright tuning and you will be set for a hair over $2100.00. That leaves you $3600.00 for Hal's and some other suspension components. Jay from Absolute Speed is having another GP on his heads right now that runs until April I believe. Give him a call and speak with him. He has wealth on info. Tell him Mark Metala told you to call. JFM has the same setup and ran 11.04 @ 121. I don't see too may cars out there putting those kind of numbers down. You will be right in the middle of the hunt and saving a ton of money...

SNAXS,

Convince you to buy a heads/cam package from MTI? Man, there are lots of reasons to choose MTI over their competition, like outstanding service, R&D of their heads/cam and engine packages, durability, outstanding installation techs, technical assistance, in-house dyno, in-house machine shop, reputation, performance, and warranty.

With just bolt-on's and tuning from MTI, I ran best ET of 11.66. I then added a C1 Hammer cam and went 11.40's. Next I added a set of MTI's Stage II heads and have since clocked a best ET of 11.03 @ 121.5 MPH. There isn't a doubt in my mind I will run a 10.XX ET within the next few weeks.

Another awesome thing about MTI is that if you have a problem with any bolt-on parts, heads/cam package, etc. you bought from them they will make it right. You won't get the run-around or get BS'ed like I have seen other companies do to people. Also, they do their own in-house tuning, in which Jayson is very well versed with LS1 Edit.

Give Jayson Cohen a call at 281 870-8787 and tell him I sent you. He'll take good care of your needs. I can guarantee you if you go with MTI you won't regret it. Good luck with your project!

Nothing against MTI. They have a good reputation. Good luck in your selection. Let us know how it does at the track.

My other comments were just to show that you can get the same performance for a lot less money. Everyone is different and what they are comfortable with that is why there are so many great vendors to choose from.

All I can say is that this is a no brainer.MTI , MTI, MTI. I have the MTI C1 Hammer cam 112 lc and the MTI Stage2 heads. This is the most deadly streetable combo I could have imagined. I don't mean kind of streetable, I mean it should have come from the factory like this. I bracket race a lot and I went from consistent 12.20s to a new best of 10.91. I pulled a new 60 ft of 1.43 Sunday @ HRP with about a 100 mph head wind and still pulled an 11.00 @ 120.65 mph. The X1 and C2 cams will produce good power also , but I have the stock 346 bottom end and I pull these times with out turning the motor tighter than 6500 rpm. IMHO , MTI has produced more consistent high HP heads cam packages than most of the competition. If you are trying to save money don't short cut yourself in the heads/cam selection or you will kick yourself for it later and I will be the first say I told you so.lol. I know of more than 5 cars that have this same package and have the same very impressive performance results. Valve train noise is typical of H/C packages so that is not even a factor. I dyno'd @ 408 RWHP with this combo. I have the stock 10 bolt w/3.23 gears and the Yank ST3500. I hope this helps ya!!! BTW- MTI rocks!!!!!!!!!

"How much does this car weigh. You are saying that no other changes were made other than the H/C and some tuning and you dropped almost 1.3 seconds??? So there was no other mods or weight reduction???"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I can't say that there were NO other changes, but here is a little more detail. I went from running consistent 12.20s in decent air then added an 80# roll cage plus a RCI 5 pt harness and dropped ? weight with the addition of Weld Drag lites and a Hawker LW battery. The race weight held right at the 3490-3520 race weight with my skinny 148 lb *** in the car(all muscle of course). This is why I didn't factor in any weight reduction. The car is not gutted.I did pull the front seat for the 10.91 though.
So from the 12.20s I added the C1 Hammer cam from MTI and went to a new best of 11.66. Keep in mind that I have done every bolt on and power enhancing mod that MTI offers and the cam was obviously a big limiting factor. From there MTI saved me from a Nasty broken defective valve spring issue that they were not legally responsible for, and installed the Magical MTI Stage 2 heads. After the the installation of the MTI S2 heads and custom tuning the car went a new best of 10.91 and my wife backed that 10.9 pass up twice with the next two runs. I can honestly say that I had never intended this car to run this quick because I didn't want to give up comfort and drivability. Lets just say MTI created a monster and I am very grateful. My wifes' SS is just one of many out there. You do the math. Good luck!!

James

Definitely the front sway bar and brackets, spare tire & jack. Also, when going to the track you can remove the rear flapper, rear seats (top and bottom), passenger seat, floor mats, exhaust, and any miscellaneous stuff.

I've had three different MTI engine combos (346ci, 382ci, 434ci) and they all have performed at the top of the field. MTI also has a warranty for their engine components and if anything ever went wrong it was fixed without a hassle. There is no price for excellent customer service, and you definitely get what you pay for.

MTI all the way! They put mine together and I love it. Jayson and crew are top notch and the performance you get is sweet! You not only get quality but awsome service. Jayson to me is by far the best tuner I know. O Yea he is the only one I know. My car runs sweet!
