Default PS air bag removal w/o removing dash....

I dont know if anyones done it this way but I did it last night w/o removing the dash.Took 1HR to save 14lbs,Wasnt to hard to get it out.

I took the top off the dash and the glove box out, then removed the dash screws up to the radio ,pulled the screws dow low by the kick panel so the dash would move a few inches. Then we took out the all screws we could see on the steel bracket with 1/4 drive ratchet and then carefully removed the dash peice with a door tool and we scut the plastic out and then we saw the air bag,we then drilled 2 holes so we could get the 7mm socket down to the exsisting screws and the complete air bag/bracket were loose.I then used a whizzer and made a small cut up on the dash and walked the bag out, lastly I used my husky air saw and cut the brack into 2 pieces and it came right out.

I then removed the silver box under the console by lifting up the middle part of the console to get to the bolts.Unplugged the moduale and snaked it out under the console.Bolted everything back, hot glue gunned the air bag piece from the dash back in and put the all the screws back and the top back and was done.

Now if I could only do that off my big fat gut

Pretty cool if you are keeping your heater box!

If not I would just pull the whole thing because there's a ton of other stuff to rip out back there while the dash is apart.

I pulled my bags last weekend and it was a total bitch to pull the dash out... my damn heater control will not adjust from the highest temp setting. I drove 150 miles in the rain Tuesday in the car and almost died from a heat stroke since I couldn't crack a window or anything. I'm going to pull it back out this weekend and see if I pinched a vacuum line or something.

Nice writeup, I felt like I was there, beer burps and all. I might be able to remove that airbag after all.

Great info. JS, when you got the bag out, did it look like you could get to the a/c section that penetrates the firewall? I'd love to ditch that and make changing the #8 a lot easier on my forearms!

I removed the entire a/c unit from inside the car. If you don't care about keeping it you can remove all the screws that you can see and then just start busting the plastic housing out with an air hammer or a regular hammer. I made a sheetmetal plate to go over the hole and screwed it from the inside so it can be removed, and yes you can now change the headers or plugs in record time. this is a track only car so we don't have a/c or heat.

Yes
I first removed the heater hoses, then the blower motor on the inside followed by the evaporator core and then started knocking holes in the plastic case until it all came out.
There are several small bolts holding it to the firewall that you can remove, some are on the inside.

The heater can probably come out looking at what was there and how u could remove it.
Its was easy to take out the air bag without removing the dash.

By the time we finished there was nothin but a nice factory hole in the firewall. As soon as I get some more time the air duct will be removed from behind the consol along with all the radio electronics.

Does the battery have to be disconnected by any chance? I sure wouldnt want to be removing it and set something off having the bag explode on my face. I know air bags arent too friendly because I just got in my first wreck the other day.

Pull the srs fuses and the pull the bat cable before u take this stuff out...
I'm going to pull the Hvac next week after seeing how easy it is and then I'm making a alum. plate to cover the hole.

There goes another 25lbs off the car

So take out all the fuses that SRS on it and then disconnect the battery? Does the airbag hold a charge? For instance, would I have to wait a certain period of time before I start?

Nope.....
You also need to unhook the wires going to the air bags....
One by the steering column and one under the glove box.

FYI, Billingsly makes a nice alum. plate for this. It's pretty cheap too.
