Default new NHRA rulebooks are out!

I unfortunately got mine about 1 to 1-1/2 weeks after most others did! Was pleasantly surprised to find a picture of the Formula on page 21! So a few things are now in print for the questioning rumors:

-A roll bar (5-point minimum, swing out door bar allowed) are required in all cars (including t-tops) between 11.00 (7.00 1/8 mile) and 11.49 (7.35 1/8 mile), in convertibles running between 11.00 (7.00 1/8 mile) and 13.49 (8.25 1/8 mile).

-Roll cage rules are unchanged from last year. Basically, a 10.99 and quicker or above 135 mph, 6.99 1/8 mile car requires a roll cage. However, an exception is made for a stock floor, firewall and body car (exc convertible) with no back-half, although wheeltubs or mini-tubbing is premitted. They can run to 10.00 (6.40 1/8 mile) with a roll bar.

Question

Thanks a ton for posting this info!! I`m going to order a Wolfe 5-point, CroMO, bolt-in Monday, (take advantage of the 20% off ) so just to clear it up, (and before I spend $700) my hard top with unaltered floor pan and fire wall, will be good to 10.00 with this roll bar? And I`m going to assume it will conform to IHRA rules as well.

Thanks again.

Yep, you'll be good to 10.00 flat in NHRA trim. However, I'm not sure about IHRA, because they had some changes as well. Check out www.ihra.com or maybe someone can post up about IHRA's new rules??

IHRA page 97- "A rollcage is mandatory on all convertibles running 10.99 or quicker 1/4 or 6.99 or quicker 1/8 mile. T-top vehicles follow convertible guidelines."

Also convertibles running 11.0 to 13.49 1/4 and 8.25 or quicker 1/8 require a rollbar. So if t-top cars follow convertible rules there I'm way over the limit next year.

I've contacted Mike Baker (the IHRA tech director) and he said this is no longer the case (2 weeks ago)...not sure if/when they are going to change the wording...

*edit* I just sent him a follow-up email asking when they are going to change the wording in the 2005 rule revision...

Do T-tops follow convertible rules in NHRA and IHRA in 2005?

Not in NHRA they don't, provided you keep your tops on, otherwise yes. But who races without their tops?

BTW, I saw the pic Derek ... very nice and even ahead of that Nova.

Kyle,

I'd assume so, but I'd wait for an officla follow-up or someone to pull an '05 IHRA book for the final word...

I've been in contact with IHRA...they are supposed to make an official ruling on this in the next 2 weeks.

it appears that they are going to follow NHRA rules regarding t-tops...
