I've got the same wheel Big Mike does. Easy install because I didn't install it, hehe. As for all the safety stuff, just keep your 5 point harness on in the street, you'd probably never hit the airbag anyway. Does anyone know if the airbag would deploy if you came down hard at the track form a wheels up launch?

Airbags only deploy under extremely fast deacceleration so the chances of them going off at a dragstrip is pretty slim unless you drive in a wall head on at 50mph. You could drop a car off a crane and if it landed square on all 4 wheels the airbags shouldnt go off, same with getting rear ended.

OTOH a airbag going off in your face with a 5 point harness would be nasty. The whole stock seatbelt/airbag setup is designed to work as a system, remove one part, either the airbag or the belt and you have no gaurantee of being 'safe' as the manufacture intended.

BTW, as far as I know not one aftermarket 5 point harness is DOT approved for street use. Aprroved and illegal are two different things though. Pretty difficult to enforce since its a personal safety issue, same with removing an airbag.

There have been a few instances of airbags going off at the dragsrip in the last few years, either from a hard launch or electrical problems.

here is my 40 dollar grant wheel from autozone. got an adapter from pep boys that worked by buying a few of them and the last gmc truck one made worked. i don't think the adapter was made by grant though that's why.

put it on like 2 years ago or something when i pulled all the bags and crap.

If you know how an airbag works its pretty hard to believe that one would deploy on a launch or landing, there are quite a few safeguards that prevent them going off in anything other then a front end collision. A launch goes in the opposite direction to set them off, unless you launched hard into the back of another car Air bags will hurt more then help in any crash that isnt almost a head on frontal hit.

Anything is possible I suppose, anyone with a car that launches hard enough should have a 5 point harness, if they have a 5 point harrness they shouldnt have an air bag IMO - but whatever makes you feel safe is the best for YOU. I have deployed a lot of airbags over the years just messing around and those things are serious when they go off..

Sounds close to what I did on mine, except I made mine from 1/8" aluminum and took the old cluster out and all the plastic behind it out. I made the same thing for my A/C panel except it's mirror polished (gauge cluster has a brushed finish)

I just got my Grant today. I'll toss it on this weekend and see what kind of weight difference it makes. I can tell you that eliminating the air bag will make a difference if it's a quarter of what the passenger bag weighs.

That's why I removed the bags and all the sensors that go with them. I think there were 4 or 5. Easy to spot since all the connectors are yellow.

John has a street car that should not be mistaken for a race car.

how do you figure bickel? if he races it exclusively then it's a race car. if it is driven on the street at ALL, then it's a mixture of both. do you know if he drives it on the street at ALL? i don't so i can't confuse the two.

you know, i hope i'm not making a mistake here. but it seems as though you're knocking him because it basically has a vin #. is that why you wouldn't call it a race car? if home is where you make it, than a race car is what you make it, or make it from at least. you seemed like a cool guy when i first started talking to you, so prehaps i'm not understanding what exactly you're trying to get across. let me know.

later,
Dave

Johns car is indeed a race car and one day he will stop being a baby and realize it.. and then stop worrying about having a damn radio when the car is never even driven on the damn street.

No worries John. Next time you see your car there will be a huge screw driver shoved through the face plate of the radio. There was a freak warehouse storage accident.

To my knowledge the quick release is SFI certified.

As to weight, if you pick up the stock steering wheel and airbag in one hand and the Grant in the other you'll see a huge difference. Some one said 5-7lbs. My "guess" would be more. Now for the passenger side airbag, that is one heavy sucker. Just pulled mine out tonight. With all the brackets that go with it, it has to weight 15+lbs.

This is the quick release hub you need for any Grant steering wheel. I have this piece and it works great!

hey that's the same one i just got with my Grant wheel. looks good. how was fitment? it looks like i'll have to remove the top part of it to make it work with the back of the wheel. is that right? do you have a part # for that one? after a second look, it doesn't seem quite the same as mine. but then it's not in front of my face either. i'll have to check tonight.

thanks,
Dave
